VOA (album)
''VOA'' is the eighth studio album by American rock musician Sammy Hagar, released on July 23, 1984, by Geffen Records. It was Hagar's last solo album before joining Van Halen. The title is a reference to the Voice of America broadcast network. The album peaked at number 32 on the ''Billboard'' 200 album charts on December 15, 1984 and features the single "I Can't Drive 55", Hagar's most successful song as a solo artist. Background and recording The album was recorded at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, California and Sunset Sound in Hollywood, and then mixed at The Power Station in New York. According to the album's liner notes,VOA album liner notes, 1984 "Burnin' Down the City" is inspired by the street artists of New York City. Sammy Hagar
Sam Roy Hagar (born October 13, 1947), also known as the Red Rocker, is an American singer, songwriter, guitarist, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. He rose to prominence in the early 1970s with the hard rock band Montrose before launching a successful solo career, scoring a hit in 1984 with " I Can't Drive 55". He enjoyed further commercial success as the lead vocalist of Van Halen from 1985 through 1996, and from 2003 to 2005. In 2007 Hagar was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Van Halen. His musical style primarily consists of hard rock and heavy metal. A lifelong entrepreneur, Hagar has founded four spirits brands and 13 restaurants. I Can't Drive 55
"I Can't Drive 55" is the lead single and first track from Sammy Hagar's eighth studio album '' VOA'' in 1984. Perpetuated by a very successful music video, it became a concert staple that continued throughout Hagar's tours as a member of Van Halen. The song is a reference to the since-repealed National Maximum Speed Law that set speed limits at in the United States. It is the 100th song on VH1's 100 Greatest Hard Rock Songs. Song origin Hagar wrote the song in response to receiving a speeding ticket in New York State outside Albany, for driving on the Northway, which at that location had a speed limit, the highest permissible speed limit in the United States at the time due to the National Maximum Speed Law enacted in 1974. David Lauser
David Lauser (born 20 February 1951) is an American rock drummer, who is most famous for playing with Sammy Hagar. Sammy Hagar and David Lauser played together in a band called Justice Brothers before Sammy Hagar joined Montrose. Lauser later played on various Sammy Hagar solo albums, starting with '' Standing Hampton'' and is now a member of The Waboritas, also played with Sammy Hagar in Los Tres Gusanos. Lauser's first marriage to Jacqueline Cushen in 1982 resulted in a daughter, Danielle Marie, also known affectionately as "Ella Bean." In 2002, Lauser married his second wife. Jesse Harms (born July 6, 1952, in Massachusetts) is an American musician and songwriter. He has worked with Sammy Hagar, David Lee Roth, Eddie Money, REO Speedwagon, Bad English, Guitar Shorty, Patty Smyth, and McAuley Schenker Group. Early life Harms was raised in Berkeley, California. He began playing the piano at 8 years old and studied classical music until he was 15. He lost interest in classical at that time, and in high school started playing the organ with a band called Zephyr, later Rags. They became friends with another band, Cookin' Mama, that guitarist Pat Thrall played in, and around 1971 some combining of the members took place.
