VAHAN (firearm)
The VAHAN (; ) is an assault rifle of Soviet/Armenian origin and was designed by Engineer and Firearms Designer Vahan S. Manasian. It can be fitted with a GP-30 grenade launcher, bayonet and scope. The weapon dates back to 1952 as the MBC-2 prototype when Manasian was a soldier in the Soviet Army. As of 2009, the VAHAN rifle has not yet been tested by Armenian government and the program has been canceled. Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic
The Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic (ArSSR), also known as Soviet Armenia, or simply Armenia, was one of the Republics of the Soviet Union, constituent republics of the Soviet Union, located in the Caucasus region of Eurasia. Soviet Armenia bordered the Soviet republics of Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic, Azerbaijan and Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic, Georgia and the independent states of Iran and Turkey. Lever-delayed Blowback
Blowback is a system of operation for self-loading firearms that obtains energy from the motion of the cartridge case as it is pushed to the rear by expanding gas created by the ignition of the propellant charge. Several blowback systems exist within this broad principle of operation, each distinguished by the methods used to control bolt movement. In most actions that use blowback operation, the breech is not locked mechanically at the time of firing: the inertia of the bolt and recoil , relative to the weight of the bullet, delay opening of the breech until the bullet has left the barrel. GP-30
The GP-25 ''Kostyor'' ("Bonfire"), GP-30 ''Obuvka'' ("Shoe") and GP-34 are a family of Russian 40 mm under-barrel Muzzleloader, muzzleloaded grenade launchers for the Kalashnikov rifle, AK family of assault rifles. The acronym GP stands for ''Granatomyot Podstvolnyj'', "under-barrel grenade launcher" in Russian, and was adopted by Soviet forces in 1978. Development The development of a grenade launcher for the AKM assault rifle began in 1966 at the Central Design and Research Bureau of Sporting and Hunting Arms (TsKIB SOO). Development continued into the 1970s, and in 1978 it was accepted into service. The main production version was known as the GP-25, and could be attached to the AKM and AK-74 assault rifles.
