Uxbridge House
Uxbridge House was built circa 1845 on Nicholson Street in the Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy, Australia. The site ownership changed hands several times, but the most prominent owner was William Bates who lived there from the 1860s until his death in 1891. The house was named by William Bates after his hometown of Uxbridge in Middlesex Middlesex (; abbreviation: Middx) is a Historic counties of England, former county in South East England, now mainly within Greater London. Its boundaries largely followed three rivers: the River Thames, Thames in the south, the River Lea, Le ..., England. Following the death of William Bates in 1891, the family moved out and by 1895 Uxbridge House had become a private hospital. By the mid 1930s the hospital was in a state of disrepair. Nicholson Street
Nicholson Street is a street in inner Melbourne. It is named after William Nicholson (Australian politician), William Nicholson, who is remembered as the "father of the ballot". He was also a member of the Victorian Legislative Council, Legislative Council, and later became Premier of Victoria (from 1859-1860). Geography Nicholson Street runs north-south through inner northern Melbourne. At its southernmost end, it connects to Spring Street, Melbourne, Spring Street near Bourke Street. Fitzroy, Victoria
Fitzroy is an inner-city suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, northeast of the Melbourne central business district, located within the City of Yarra Local government areas of Victoria, local government area. William Bates (Australian Politician)
The Hon William Bates Parliament of Victoria, MLA (27 February 1825 – 12 January 1891) was a politician in History of Australia (1851–1900), colonial Victoria, Australia. Bates was born at Uxbridge, in Middlesex, and emigrated to South Australia in 1850. In 1852 the gold discoveries tempted him to Victoria, where he went into business at Bendigo, Sandhurst, and after four years' successful trading, removed to Melbourne, where he had a prosperous career as a general merchant. In 1868 he was returned to the Victorian Legislative Assembly for the electoral district of Collingwood, Victoria, Collingwood as a supporter of the Darling Grant, defeating no less a candidate than the Hon James Service.
