Utøya () is an island in the Tyrifjorden lake in Hole, Norway, Hole municipality, in the county of Buskerud, Norway. The island is , situated off the shore, by the European route E16, E16 road, about driving distance south of Hønefoss, and northwest of Oslo city centre. The 2011 Norway attacks#Utøya mass shooting, 2011 Utøya mass shooting took place on the island. Overview Utøya is owned by the Workers' Youth League (Norway), Workers' Youth League (''AUF''), a youth group associated with the Labour Party (Norway), Labour Party, which holds an annual summer camp there. The island is operated commercially by Utøya AS. The island is largely forested, with some open spaces. A small pier on the east side of the island is used to ferry people to and from Utøykaia on the mainland. There are also permanent buildings. Tyrifjorden
Tyrifjorden (Lake Tyri) is a lake in Norway. It lies northwest of Oslo and is the nation's fifth largest lake with an area of 138.56 km2. It has a volume of 13 km3, is 295 meters deep at its deepest, and lies 63 meters above sea level. The lake's primary source is the Begna river, which discharges into Tyrifjorden at Hønefoss where the river forms the waterfall of Hønefossen. Its primary outlet is at Vikersund near the lake's southwest corner, where Tyrifjorden discharges into the Drammenselva river. Sundvollen
Sundvollen is a village in the municipality of Hole, in the county of Buskerud, Norway. Sundvollen is located along the east side of Tyrifjorden where the E16 crosses west over Steinsfjorden, the northeastern arm of Tyrifjorden, to Kroksund. The village had 801 inhabitants as of January 2009. Sundvollen (Sundvolden) was first the name of the local farm, which included much of the local real estate. The name is connected to the formation of the lake, which narrows in this area. In the census of 1801, 71 persons lived at and nearby the farm (both farmers and serfs with their families). From the farm, the hotel sprung, possibly as a wayside inn from first. As a crucial meeting point, the farm prospered from serving travelers going up to central Ringerike.
