Uttarayani Fair
The Uttarayani Fair, also known as Uttarayani Mela, is an annual fair held in the Kumaon division, Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, India. It marks the occasion of Makar Sankranti, typically taking place in the second week of January. The most significant celebration occurs at Bageshwar, where the fair is held along the banks of the Sarju, Saryu and Gomti River, Gomti rivers, particularly at the Bagnath Temple. Etymology The term "Uttarayani" is derived from two Sanskrit words: "Uttara" (north) and "Ayana" (movement or path). It refers to the sun's northward movement from the Tropic of Capricorn to the Tropic of Cancer. This astronomical event marks the end of the winter solstice and the beginning of longer days. Kumaon Division
Kumaon (; , ; historically romanised as KemāonJames Prinsep (Editor)John McClelland ) is a List of divisions in India, revenue and administrative division in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. It spans over the eastern half of the state and is bounded on the north by Tibet, on the east by Nepal, on the south by the state of Uttar Pradesh, and on the west by Garhwal Division, Garhwal.
