Utsira Lighthouse
Utsira Lighthouse () is a coastal lighthouse in Rogaland county, Norway. It sits on the western side of the island of Utsira in the municipality of Utsira. History The lighthouse was first lit in 1844, and listed as a protected site in 1999. At an elevation of , the lighthouse has the highest elevation of all the lighthouses in Norway. Originally, the lighthouse had a twin lighthouse located about away. The twin lighthouses were used to distinguish it from other nearby lighthouses, but one of the two lighthouses was decommissioned in 1890. The functional lighthouse was automated in 1992 and de-manned in 2004. Since 2008, one of the lighthouse keeper's buildings has served as a tourist cabin. The tall round stone building is painted red with a white trim. At the top, there is a 1st order Fresnel lens which emits three white flashes every 60 seconds. Utsira (island)
Utsira is an island in Rogaland county, Norway. Utsira Church and Utsira Lighthouse are located on the island. Island The island makes up almost all of Utsira, Utsira municipality. The island lies about west of the island of Karmøy (island), Karmøy, with the Sirafjorden lying between the two islands. The island's only connection to the mainland is by ferry, with four regular ferry routes connecting the island to the Haugesund (town), town of Haugesund each day. The ferries are operated by Rutebåten Utsira. Most of the island's population lives in the central valley that runs north-south on the island. There are about 200 residents of the island. Utsira is known as the best birding site in Norway. There have been 317 different species recorded on Utsira. The island gives its name to the BBC ''Shipping Forecast'' areas of "North" and "South Utsire" (the name of the island was spelled ''Utsire'' between 1875–1924). The candela (symbol: cd) is the unit of luminous intensity in the International System of Units (SI). It measures luminous power per unit solid angle emitted by a light source in a particular direction. Utsira () is the least populous municipality in Norway. The island municipality is located in northwestern Rogaland county, just off the western coast of Norway. Lighthouses In Norway
The coast of Norway is long and there have been a total of 212 lighthouses along it, but no more than 154 have ever been operational at the same time. The first, Lindesnes Lighthouse, opened in 1655; the newest Lighthouse, Anda Lighthouse, was finished in 1932. The first lighthouses were private operations, but in 1821 the government made the Channel and Harbor Inspector responsible for lighthouses in Norway. A dedicated Lighthouse Administration was set up in 1841. The lighthouses are today mostly automated and since 1974, run by the Norwegian Coastal Administration. Two lightvessels had been operated along the Norwegian coast. "Enigheden" off Ålesund from 1856 was replaced with Lepsøyrev Lighthouse in 1879, and "Ildjernsflu" moored off Nesodden from 1914 until it was scrapped in 1968.
