Agilolfings
The Agilolfings were a noble family that ruled the Duchy of Bavaria on behalf of their Merovingian suzerains from about 550 until 788. A cadet branch of the Agilolfings also ruled the Kingdom of the Lombards intermittently from 616 to 712. They are mentioned as the leading dynasty in the ''Lex Baiuvariorum'' (c. 743). Their Bavarian residence was at Regensburg. The dynasty's eponymous ancestor is Agilulf (Suebi), Agilulf, a semi-legendary prince of the Suebi and descendant of Hermeric, the 5th-century Suevic king of Kingdom of Galicia, Galicia, possibly identical with one Agilulf, a steward of the Visigothic king Theoderic II, who was executed in 457. Uta Rohländer, nee Fromm (born 30 June 1969 in Merseburg) is a retired German sprinter who specialised in the 400 metres. At the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, she won a bronze medal in the 4 × 400 metres relay with her teammates Linda Kisabaka, Anja Rücker and Grit Breuer. Uta Ranke-Heinemann (2 October 1927 – 25 March 2021) was a German theologian, academic, and author. In 1969, she was the first woman in the world to be habilitated in Catholic theology. She held a chair of ancient Church history and the New Testament at the University of Duisburg-Essen. When her license to teach was revoked by the bishop because of her critical position in matters of faith, the university created a nondenominational chair of History of Religion. Her 1988 book '' Eunuchs for the Kingdom of Heaven'', criticising the Catholic Church's stance on women and sexuality, was published in several editions, and translated in 12 languages. Uta Pippig (born 7 September 1965) is a retired German long-distance runner, and the first woman to officially win the Boston Marathon three consecutive times (1994–1996). She also won the Berlin Marathon three times (1990, 1992 and 1995); the 1993 New York City Marathon; represented Germany at the Olympic Games in 1992 and 1996, and won a bronze medal at the 1991 World 15km Road Race Championship. Uta Nickel (born 19 July 1941) is a German economist and one of the former finance ministers of East Germany. Early life and education Nickel was born in Leipzig on 19 July 1941. She studied economics. Career Nickel joined the ruling party of East Germany, Socialist Unity, in 1960. She served as the councillor of finance of Leipzig in the period between 1963 and 1976. She was state secretary for finances and prices from 1988 to 1989. She was appointed minister of finance and prices on 18 November 1989, replacing Ernst Höfner in the post. Uta Caecilia Merzbach (February 9, 1933 – June 27, 2017) was a German-American historian of mathematics who became the first curator of mathematical instruments at the Smithsonian Institution. Early life Merzbach was born in Berlin, where her mother was a philologist and her father was an economist who worked for the Reich Association of Jews in Germany during World War II. The Nazi government closed the association in June 1943; they arrested the family, along with other leading members of the association, and sent them to the Theresienstadt concentration camp on August 4, 1943.
