Urs Stammbach
Urs Stammbach (born 26 October 1939) is a Switzerland, Swiss mathematician, specializing in homological algebra. Stammbach studied at ETH Zurich, where he obtained his Diplom in 1964 and received his doctorate in 1966 under the supervision of Beno Eckmann (and Heinz Hopf) with dissertation ''Anwendungen der Homologietheorie der Gruppen auf Zentralreihen und auf Invarianten von Präsentierungen'' (Applications of homology theory of groups to central series and to invariants of Presentation of a group, presentations). As a postdoc Stasmbach was from 1966 to 1967 at ETH Zurich and from 1967 to 1969 at Cornell University. At ETH Zurich, he was from 1969 to 1972 an assistant professor, from 1972 to 1979 an associate professor, and from 1979 to 2005 a full professor, retiring as professor emeritus in 2005. The Bibliotheca Teubneriana, or ''Bibliotheca Scriptorum Graecorum et Romanorum Teubneriana'', also known as Teubner editions of Greek and Latin texts, comprise one of the most thorough modern collection published of ancient (and some medieval) Greco-Roman literature. Ioan Mackenzie James FRS (born 23 May 1928) is a British mathematician working in the field of topology, particularly in homotopy theory. Biography James was born in Croydon, Surrey, England, and was educated at St Paul's School, London and Queen's College, Oxford. In 1953 he earned a D. Phil. from the University of Oxford for his thesis entitled ''Some problems in algebraic topology'', written under the direction of J. H. C. Whitehead. In 1957 he was appointed reader in pure mathematics, a post which he held until 1969. From 1959 until 1969 he was a senior research fellow at St John's College. He held the Savilian Chair of Geometry at the University of Oxford from 1970 to 1995. He is now a professor emeritus. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1968. Günther Frei
Günther Hans Frei (born 19 May 1942 in St. Gallen) is a Swiss mathematician and historian of mathematics. Education and career Frei studied mathematics, physics and languages at the University of Zurich. There he received his doctoral degree in 1968 with advisor Bartel Leendert van der Waerden and dissertation on geometry (''Beiträge zur axiomatischen Inhaltstheorie''). He became an instructor in 1968 at the University of Notre Dame and in 1970 at Quebec's Université Laval, where he became in 1971 a professor. He remained there until he retired as professor emeritus and returned to Switzerland to live in Hombrechtikon. Frei's research deals with number theory and the history of mathematics, especially the history of number theory in the 19th and 20th centuries and Swiss mathematics.
