''Urkki'' was a Finnish language men's magazine that was in circulation between 1974 and 1983. The magazine was started with the subtitle of "the world's magazine" as a Finnish edition of the Danish magazine ''Ugens Rapport''. The title of the magazine, Urkki, was a reference to the Finnish President of the period, Urho Kekkonen. ''Urkki'' mostly featured masculine oriented topics such as war adventures and news from other countries and did not focus on nude models or sexual content. Following the established tradition for the Finnish men's magazines that were launched after World War II the magazine employed a sarcastic approach towards reporting domestic politics. In 1979 the magazine had a total of 238,000 readers of whom 38,000 were women. Saint Urho
Saint Urho ( ) is a fictional saint of Finland, created and elaborated by Finnish Americans in Northern Minnesota in the 1950s, to celebrate their heritage and extend celebrations of Saint Patrick's Day. His celebration day is set to March 16, the day before the March 17 feast day of Saint Patrick. Saint Patrick's feast day is celebrated by Irish Americans, of whom there are also many in Minnesota. Creation The legend of Saint Urho was the invention of a Finnish American named Richard Mattson, who worked at Ketola's Department Store in Virginia, Minnesota in the spring of 1956. Mattson later recounted that he invented St. Urho when he was questioned by coworker Gene McCavic about the Finns' lack of a saint like the Irish St. Patrick, whose feat of casting the snakes out of Ireland is remembered on St. Patrick's Day. Urho Hietanen
Urho Hietanen is a fictional character in Väinö Linna's 1954 war novel '' The Unknown Soldier''. He is one of the main characters in the novel. Hietanen is considered to be inspired by Väinö Linna's comrade-in-arms, Sergeant Pauli Santa (1919–1982) from Vehmaa; however, Hietanen's fate is different from that of his role model, as Linna had freely combined and altered events in this regard, and some features may have also been taken from a couple of other people. The destruction of the Kliment Voroshilov tank with an anti-tank mine, which is described as the most heroic act by Hietanen, is also based on a true incident witnessed by Linna with his own eyes. Urho Peltonen
Urho Pellervo Peltonen (15 January 1893 – 7 January 1951) was a Finnish athlete who competed mainly in the javelin throw. He competed for Finland in the 1912 Summer Olympics held in Stockholm, Sweden, in both the regular and two-handed javelin throw, a one-time Olympic event in which the total was counted as a sum of best throws with the right hand and with the left hand. Peltonen won a bronze medal in the latter event behind fellow Finns Julius Saaristo and Väinö Siikaniemi and one place ahead of Swede Eric Lemming, who had won the one hand competition. Eight years later after World War I he again competed for Finland in the 1920 Summer Olympics held in Antwerp, Belgium, where he won the silver medal in the regular javelin as Finland swept the first four places with Jonni Myyrä winning, Paavo Johansson in third and Saaristo in fourth. Urho Sakari Lehtovaara (27 October 1917 – 15 January 1949) was one of the top scoring Finnish Air Force aces. He was awarded the Mannerheim Cross on 9 July 1944. In 1949, Lehtovaara killed himself while being interrogated for his suspected involvement in the Weapons Cache Case, a right-wing conspiracy after the ceasefire to stash weapons across the country and form a stay-behind guerrilla army in preparation for a potential Soviet invasion. Biography Resident in Salo by 1934, Lehtovaara became a member of the local aero club. Lehtovaara volunteered for military service with the Air Force in 1937. He remained in service as a non-commissioned officer (NCO) with LeLv 26, flying Bristol Bulldog biplanes.
