Urania (steamboat)
The steamboat ''Urania'' was a vessel that operated on Lake Washington and Puget Sound in the first part of the 20th century. Construction ''Urania'' was built at the Lake Washington Mill Company shipyard, south of Leschi Park on Lake Washington. She was launched on May 11, 1907, and christened by Miss Daisy Johnson, daughter of her builder. She was commissioned by Captain John Anderson, to expand his fleet of steamboats on Lake Washington, operating under the name of the Anderson Steamboat Company. She was long, with a beam of . She displaced 93 gross tons. ''Urania'' was similar to but slightly shorter than another Anderson vessel, ''Fortuna'', built in 1906. Her oil-fired steam engine was built by Seattle Machine Works. It was reported to be capable of producing 550 horsepower. Fully loaded, with 350 passengers, ''Urania'' could maintain a speed of 16.6 knots. Leschi Park
Leschi Park is an park in the Leschi neighborhood of Seattle, Washington, named after Chief Leschi of the Nisqually tribe. The majority of the park is a grassy hillside that lies west of Lakeside Avenue S. and features tennis courts, picnic tables, and a playground. Across Lakeside Avenue to the east is the western shore of Lake Washington and a small lawn with benches. To its south is the southern portion of Leschi Moorage, separated from the northern portion by a parking lot in the E. Yesler Way right-of-way, private docks, and an office/restaurant complex. The cable car run from Pioneer Square that operated from September 27, 1888, to August 10, 1940, terminated here. Steamboats Of Lake Washington
Lake Washington steamboats and ferries operated from about 1875 to 1951, transporting passengers, vehicles and freight across Lake Washington, a large lake to the east of Seattle, Washington. Before modern highways and bridges were built, the only means of crossing the lake, other than the traditional canoe or rowboat, was by steamboat, and, later, by ferry. ''Dawn'' was a wooden passenger ferry on Lake Washington in the early part of the twentieth century. Construction ''Dawn'' was built by the Anderson Steamboat Company to replace ''Urania'', which burned to the waterline in February 1914. She was built at the Anderson Shipyard in Houghton, Washington and launched in June 1914. The ship was long, with a beam of . She displaced 70 gross tons and 48 net tons. Her engine and boiler were reused from Anderson's steamer ''Xanthus''. The oil-fired steam engine produced 120 horsepower. The ship cost $7,500 to build. Houghton, Washington
Houghton is one of the lakeside neighborhoods of the city of Kirkland, Washington. Consisting mostly of upscale, single-family homes, Houghton overlooks Lake Washington and is one of the wealthier districts of the Eastside suburbs of Seattle. The village was named for Willard Houghton, a local lumberman. Houghton incorporated in 1948. In 1950, Census records showed there were 1,065 people living in the town of Houghton. ''Cyrene'' was a steamboat that operated initially on Puget Sound and later on Lake Washington from 1891 to 1914. ''Cyrene'' and another similar vessel ''Xanthus'' were somewhat unusual in that they had clipper bows and were both originally built as yachts. Construction and launching ''Cyrene'' was built in Seattle in a boatyard on the site of Colman Dock. The vessel was commissioned as a yacht by James M. Colman, a prominent early Seattle businessman. Anderson Steamboat Company
Lake Washington Shipyards was a shipyard in the northwest United States, located in Houghton, Washington (today Kirkland) on the shore of Lake Washington, east of Seattle. Today, the shipyards are the site of the lakeside Carillon Point business park. The shipyards built many civilian and U.S. Navy ships. History Lake Washington Shipyard was founded in the 19th century as the Anderson Shipyard. This shipyard specialized in the construction of wooden tugs and ferries. In 1923, Anderson Shipyard was bought by Charles Burckardt and renamed Lake Washington Shipyards. The new shipyard converted to steel shipbuilding.
