Uptown Records
Uptown Records is an American record label, based in New York City, founded in 1986 by old school rapper ‘Dr Jekyll’ - Andre Harrell. From the late 1980s into the early 1990s, it was a leader in R&B and hip-hop. Beginnings and success In 1986, Andre Harrell, one half of short-lived rap duo Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde, founded Uptown Records. Its compilation album, ''Uptown Is Kickin' It'' (1986) included the label's signees Heavy D & The Boyz and was distributed by MCA Records. The acts who recorded on the album were collectively known as The Uptown Crew. The Heavy D & The Boyz' debut album, '' Living Large'' (1987) was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America and found moderate mainstream success. Another artist that put Uptown on the map was Al B. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) is a trade organization that represents the music recording industry in the United States. Its members consist of record labels and distributors that the RIAA says "create, manufacture, and/or distribute approximately 85% of all legally sold recorded music in the United States". Sean John Combs (born November 4, 1969), better known by his stage name Diddy, and formerly Puff Daddy and P. Diddy, is an American rapper, record producer, and record executive. Trouble T Roy
Troy Dixon (October 19, 1967July 15, 1990), better known as Trouble T Roy, was a hip-hop dancer with the group Heavy D and the Boyz from 1987 until his death in 1990. Death On July 14, 1990, while on tour in Indianapolis, Dixon and others were horseplaying after a performance and walking on a raised exit ramp outside Market Square Arena. During the commotion, someone pushed a trash barrel down the ramp. Dixon got on the ledge to avoid the barrel, however he lost his balance and fell from a height of approximately two stories. He was rushed to the hospital, but died the next day of injuries he had suffered, at age 22. His death was ruled an accident. Peaceful Journey
''Peaceful Journey'' is the third album by American rap group Heavy D & the Boyz. It was released on July 2, 1991, for Uptown Records and was produced by Pete Rock, DJ Eddie F, Teddy Riley, Marley Marl and Howie Tee. This marked the group's first album since the death of member Trouble T Roy, who died almost a year before the album's release, and several songs on the album pay tribute to him. Though not as successful as the group's previous album, '' Big Tyme'', the album was able to reach Platinum status and made it to number 21 on the ''Billboard'' 200 and number 5 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The Future (Guy Album)
''The Future'' is the second studio album by American R&B group Guy, released on November 13, 1990, on Uptown Records. It was their last album before their reunion a decade later. Background ''The Future'' had a much darker tone in stark contrast to their debut. Most of it had to do with things going on behind the scenes. A year after the release of their debut album, they fired their manager Gene Griffin—who they claimed allocated funds from the group. This revelation angered all of the members, and particularly infuriated lead singer Aaron Hall—so much so that he didn't sing on half of the album. Hall revealed: "''There came a time where I just did not want to sing a single note. To be honest, it was the money. It just became too depressing. New Jack Swing
New jack swing, new jack, or swingbeat is a fusion genre of the rhythms and production techniques of hip hop and dance-pop, and the urban contemporary sound of R&B. Spearheaded by producers Teddy Riley, Bernard Belle, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Dallas Austin, new jack swing was most popular from the late 1980s to early 1990s. New jack swing can be defined as "pop music usually performed by black musicians that combines elements of jazz, funk, rap, and rhythm and blues." Guy is an American hip hop, R&B and soul group founded in 1987 by Teddy Riley, Aaron Hall, and Timmy Gatling. Hall's younger brother Damion Hall replaced Gatling after the recording of the group's self-titled debut album. The group released their debut album, which went on to sell over a million copies and was certified double platinum.
