Uptown (band)
Uptown (Korean: 업타운) was a pioneering South Korean hip hop group that formed in 1997. The group's four original members were Chris Jung, Carlos Galvan, Steve Kim and Tasha Reid. The group underwent several line-up changes during the 90s and disbanded in 2000 following drug charges against Jung, Galvan, and Kim. When Reid left Uptown to pursue a solo career, the group made a comeback without her in 2006 with the album ''Testimony''. Teenage rapper Jessica H. O. joined the group for the album. Jung was the only remaining original member on the group's 2009 album, ''New Era,'' which featured new members Maniac, Snacky Chan, and Swings. Uptown has been inactive since its 2010 album ''Surprise!'' Korean Hip Hop
Korean hip-hop, also known as K-hip-hop or K-rap, is a subgenre of the South Korean popular music. It is widely considered to have originated in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and has since become increasingly popular, both in South Korea and abroad. While South Korea's hip-hop culture includes various elements such as rap, graffiti, DJing, turntablism, and b-boying, rapping makes up a significant part of the culture. The term "hip-hop" is largely recognized and understood as "rap" in Korea. Natasha Shanta Reid (born May 31, 1981), better known by her Korean name Yoon Mi-rae (), often stylized as ''Yoonmirae'', is an American-born based South Korean rapper, singer, songwriter, and producer, who is also a member of Korean hip hop trio MFBTY. Biography Early life and education Yoon was born on May 31, 1981, in Fort Hood (now Fort Cavazos) in Texas, to a South Korean mother and an African-American father. Jessica Ho (born December 17, 1988), better known by her stage name Jessi, is an American rapper and singer based in South Korea. She was born in New York, raised in New Jersey, and moved to South Korea at the age of 15. Jessi originally debuted in South Korea in 2005 and briefly joined the hip hop group Uptown in 2006. After a hiatus, she returned to music as part of the hip-hop trio Lucky J and as a soloist under YMC Entertainment, until the group's disbandment in 2016. Moon Ji-hoon (, born October 14, 1986), better known by the stage name Swings (Korean: 스윙스), is a South Korean rapper. Formerly under the label Brand New Music, he is currently signed to P Nation. Career Swings debuted in 2008 with the extended play ''Upgrade''. He joined the hip hop group Uptown in 2009 but left by the end of the year. He released his first full-length album, ''Growing Pains'', in 2010. He gained popularity after competing on the second season of the TV rap competition ''Show Me the Money'' in 2013.
