Upton Rangers F.C. was an English association football club from the Upton Park area of London. History The earliest known match for the club is a 6–0 victory over the 1st Surrey Rifles F.C. in 1877. The biggest win known for the club is an 8–0 home victory against the Downs club in February 1879. In 1882, the club became a founder member of the London Football Association, and entered the first London Senior Cup. In the first round the club lost 15–0 to the Old Brightonians at Dulwich, which was the club's heaviest known defeat. Despite this record defeat, the club entered the FA Cup in 1883-84. Upton Park is an area of the East London borough of Newham, centred on Green Street which is the boundary between West Ham and East Ham. History Toponymy The place name ultimately derives from the farmstead and hamlet of ''Upton'', sited at Upton Lane in the parish of West Ham. The place name is first recorded as ''Hupington'' in 1203. The place name is thought likely to mean 'at the high lying farmstead'. West Ham Park
West Ham Park is a privately owned public space, privately owned public park in West Ham in the London Borough of Newham. Spanning , it is the largest park in the borough. The park has been managed by the City of London Corporation since 1874. Records from 1566 show that the park had been a part of the estate of Upton House, later known as Ham House (Newham), Ham House. William Rooke, who had inherited the estate, enlarged it to in 1559. The estate was purchased by John Elliot (Royal Navy officer), John Elliott in 1752, who owned it for 10 years. It was acquired in 1762 by John Fothergill (physician), John Fothergill, who enlarged the grounds to around and created a sizeable botanical garden, which had been described as 'second only to Kew'. He would often accept rare plants in lieu of his fees as a physician. After Fothergill's death in 1780, the contents of the garden were largely sold off.
