Upper Hunter Shire (1906–1957)
Upper Hunter Shire was a local government area in the Hunter region of New South Wales, Australia. Upper Hunter Shire was proclaimed on 7 March 1906 as Wooluma Shire, one of 134 shires created after the passing of the '' Local Government (Shires) Act 1905''. The shire was renamed Woolooma Shire on 13 February 1907. It was later renamed Upper Hunter Shire on 11 April 1917. The shire absorbed the Municipality of Aberdeen on 7 October 1937. The shire office was in Scone. Hunter Region
The Hunter Region, also commonly known as the Hunter Valley, is a region of New South Wales, Australia, extending from approximately to north of Sydney. It contains the Hunter River and its tributaries with highland areas to the north and south. Situated at the northern end of the Sydney Basin bioregion, the Hunter Valley is one of the largest river valleys on the NSW coast, and is most commonly known for its wineries and coal industry. Most of the population of the Hunter Region lives within of the coast, with 55% of the entire population living in the cities of Newcastle and Lake Macquarie. There are numerous other towns and villages scattered across the region in the eleven local government areas (LGAs) that make up the region. Scone, New South Wales
Scone is a town in the Upper Hunter Shire in the Hunter Region of New South Wales, Australia. At the 2006 census, Scone had a population of 5,624 people. It is on the New England Highway north of Muswellbrook about 270 kilometres north of Sydney, and is part of the New England (federal) and Upper Hunter (state) electorates. Scone is in a farming area and is also noted for breeding Thoroughbred racehorses. It is known as the 'Horse capital of Australia'. History Allan Cunningham was the first recorded European person to travel into the Scone area, reaching the Upper Dartbrook and Murrurundi areas in 1823. Surveyor Henry Dangar travelled through the area, prior to passing over the Liverpool Range above Murrurundi in 1824. The first properties in the area were Invermein and Segenhoe in 1825. Local Government (Shires) Act 1905 was a landmark New South Wales statute notable for the compulsory incorporation of local government areas for around 40% of the area of New South Wales. The Act created 134 rural shires, many surrounding a small urban area separately and voluntarily incorporated under the '' Municipalities Act 1858'' and the following ''Municipalities Act 1867'' and '' Municipalities Act 1897'' As well as the compulsory incorporation of rural areas, the ''Local Government (Shires) Act'' repealed the ''Municipalities Act'' - bringing local government under one legislative framework. ''The Scone Advocate'' is an Australian local newspaper, serving the communities of Scone, Aberdeen and Murrurundi in the Upper Hunter Valley. It is owned by Australian Community Media, and goes on sale each Thursday for $1.40. The newspaper was founded in 1887, the same year Scone was declared a municipality. History The ''Advocate'' began publication on 7 October 1887 as a weekly broadsheet newspaper, under the ownership of founder Arthur "Advocate" Smith. Five years later, it became a twice-weekly publication, and in 1898, the paper purchased their first typewriter. In 1933, Smith died, and was replaced by his son Arthur Fleming "Tod" Smith. The paper commenced construction of a new building in 1935, and later soon moved to a new location in Kelly Street, replacing the original offices at the corner of Liverpool and Guernsey Streets, which were destroyed by fire in 1942.
