Upper Hunter Shire (1906-1957)
The Upper Hunter Shire is a local government area in the Upper Hunter Valley of New South Wales, Australia. The Shire was formed in May 2004 from the Scone Shire and parts of Murrurundi and Merriwa shires. The mayor of the Upper Hunter Shire Council is Cr. Maurice Collison, following the sudden resignation of Wayne Bedggood as mayor and as a councillor on 9 June 2020. No reason has been given for the sudden resignation. Council's General Manager is Greg McDonald. Towns The towns of the Upper Hunter are Scone, Parkville, Aberdeen, Murrurundi, and Merriwa, as well as several villages, including Bunnan, Gundy, Moonan Flat, Ellerston, Wingen, Blandford and Cassilis. Of the towns, only Aberdeen on the Shire's southeastern border is situated on the Hunter River. Warrumbungle Shire
The Warrumbungle Shire is a local government area in the central western region of New South Wales, Australia. The Shire is traversed by the Newell Highway. The Warrumbungle mountain range and Warrumbungles National Park are major tourist attractions for the Shire. Its seat is located in Coonabarabran, a town in the southwest. Moonan Flat
Moonan Flat is a village in the Upper Hunter Shire local government area, about north-east of Scone in the Upper Upper Hunter Region of New South Wales, Australia. It is about from Sydney, the state capital. The Village Moonan Flat the closest town to the western entrance to the Barrington Tops National Park. The town is on both sides of the Hunter River, connected by a vehicle bridge and by a suspension footbridge. The nearby locality of Moonan Brook was once a gold mining town on a stream of that name. Although there are only twenty or so houses in the township, the town has a post office, a hotel (The Victoria), a campground and a School of Arts Hall (The Soldiers’ Memorial). Gundy
Gundy is a locality in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales, Australia. The locality is in the Upper Hunter Shire local government area and on the Pages River, north of the state capital, Sydney. At the 2011 census, Gundy had a population of 188. History European settlement in Gundy started in 1826 with a land grant to John Stewart who surveyed the Upper Hunter River in the early 1800s. The village was originally known as Bellevue, the name of a nearby property. It acquired its current name from a Mrs. Gundy who ran an inn further along the road. The town "initially served as a stopover for teams travelling from Scone to stations located further up the Pages and Isis Rivers". The discovery of gold nearby saw Gundy develop as a service centre for miners with an inn and church constructed. Merriwa, New South Wales
Merriwa is a town located in the Upper Hunter Shire, in the far west of the Hunter region of New South Wales, Australia. The town is located on the Golden Highway, northwest of Sydney and about halfway between Newcastle and Dubbo. At the 2011 census, Merriwa had a population of 1,790 people. Up until 2004, Merriwa was part of the Merriwa Shire local government area, when it was merged with nearby Scone Shire and Murrurundi Shire councils to form the Upper Hunter Council. Murrurundi
Murrurundi ( ) is a rural town located in the Upper Hunter Shire, in the Upper Hunter region of New South Wales, Australia. Murrurundi is situated northwest by road from Newcastle and north from Sydney. At the the town had a population of 822. The town is almost completely surrounded by mountains of the Liverpool Range, and is located on the Pages River, a tributary of the Hunter River. History and overview Prior to European settlement, the Murrurundi district was home to the Wanaruah and possibly the Kamilaroi Aboriginal people. The name "Murrurundi" is often erroneously thought to come from an Aboriginal word meaning "nestling in the valley". It does in fact mean "five fingers", a representation of the rock formation visible at the northern end of the township. Aberdeen, New South Wales
Aberdeen is a small town in the upper Hunter Region of New South Wales, Australia, in Upper Hunter Shire. It is 12 kilometres north of Muswellbrook on the New England Highway. History In 1828 Thomas Potter McQueen was granted 10,000 acres, and named the small township after George Hamilton-Gordon, 4th Earl of Aberdeen. Merriwa Shire
Merriwa Shire was a local government area in New South Wales, Australia. Merriwa Shire was based in the town of Merriwa, New South Wales, and covered an area of the upper Hunter Valley region, bounded by the Liverpool Range to the north, drained by several rivers and creeks flowing southwards to the Goulburn River (New South Wales), Goulburn River. Merriwa was the only significant town in the shire. The Shire was abolished in the 2004 local government restructuring, and combined with Scone Shire and most of Murrurundi Shire to form the new Upper Hunter Shire.
