''Untitled'', also known as ''Figure Group'', is a 1960 sculpture by artist Joe Falsetti and architect David Schackne Jr., installed outside the east entrance of the Columbus Public Schools' Administration Office (270 East State Street) in Columbus, Ohio, United States. Description and history The artwork features four abstract fiberglass figures, each measuring approximately 13 ft. x 2 ft. 8 in. x 3 ft., on a steel armature. The teacher and three students are installed on an aggregate concrete base measuring approximately 1 ft. 1 in. x 7 ft. 1 in. x 7 ft. 1 in. Armature (sculpture)
In sculpture, an armature is a framework around which the sculpture is built, when the sculpture could not stand on its own. This framework provides structure and stability, especially when a plastic material such as wax, newspaper or clay is being used as the medium. When sculpting the human figure, the armature is analogous to the major skeleton and has essentially the same purpose: to hold the body erect. An armature is often made of heavy, dark aluminium wire which is stiff, but can be bent and twisted into shape without much difficulty. The wire is affixed to a base which is usually made of wood. The artist then begins fleshing out the sculpture by adding wax or clay over the wire. Depending on the material and technique, the armature may be left buried within the sculpture but, if the sculpture is to be hollowed out for firing, it must be removed. Save Outdoor Sculpture!
Save Outdoor Sculpture! (SOS!) was a community-based effort to identify, document, and conserve outdoor sculpture in the United States. The program was initiated in 1989 and ended in 1999. History Save Outdoor Sculpture! was initiated by Heritage Preservation: The National Institute of Conservation in 1989. As of 1998, volunteers had cataloged and assessed the condition of over 30,000 outdoor statues and monuments. The Smithsonian Museum of American Art became an active partner in the SOS! project, making SOS! material available online as part of the Inventory of American Sculpture at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. "Some of the most-requested materials" are available via the Foundation for Advancement in Conservation.
