''Unternehmen Michael'' (Operation Michael or The Michael Action; English title ''The Private's Job'') is a 1937 German film directed by Karl Ritter, the first of three films about the First World War which he made during the period when the Third Reich was rearming. Plot summary The film is set in the First World War and is based on a 1932 play by Hans Fritz von Zwehl (''Frühlingsschlacht'', 'Spring Battle', originally also titled ''Unternehmen Michael'') about the German offensive Operation Michael during the First World War, which was launched on 21 March 1918. The British are in possession of the village of Beaurevoir. The Germans plan to send in assault troops to take the village, but their commanding officer, Captain Hill, is injured the night before. Karl Ritter (director)
Karl Ritter (7 November 1888 – 7 April 1977) was a German film producer and director responsible for many Nazi Germany, Nazi propaganda films. He had previously been one of the first German military pilots. He spent most of his later life in Argentina. Early life Ritter was born in Würzburg. Operation Michael () was a major German military offensive during World War I that began the German spring offensive on 21 March 1918. It was launched from the Hindenburg Line, in the vicinity of Saint-Quentin, France. Its goal was to break through the Allied (Entente) lines and advance in a north-westerly direction to seize the Channel Ports, which supplied the British Expeditionary Force (BEF), and to drive the BEF into the sea. Two days later General Erich Ludendorff, the chief of the German General Staff, adjusted his plan and pushed for an offensive due west, along the whole of the British front north of the River Somme. This was designed to first separate the French and British Armies before continuing with the original concept of pushing the BEF into the sea. The Reich Ministry for Public Enlightenment and Propaganda (, RMVP), also known simply as the Ministry of Propaganda (), controlled the content of the press, literature, visual arts, film, theater, music and radio in Nazi Germany. Malte Richard Friedrich Jaeger (sometimes named in cast lists as Malte Jäger; 4 July 1911 – 10 January 1991) was a German actor and theatre director. Early life Malte Jaeger was the youngest of three children, son of the newspaper publisher Malte Heinrich Gustav Jaeger and his second Metta wife Christine, née Mueller.
