Club Unión Española S.A.D.P. is a professional football club based in the Independencia neighborhood, commune of Santiago, Chile currently participating in the Primera División de Chile. History Foundation, Amateur Era and First seasons The team was founded as Centro Español de Instrucción y Recreación on 18 May 1897 by a group of Spanish immigrants resident in Chile. In 1918 two other teams were founded: Club Ciclista Ibérico and the Club Ibérico Balompié. Both clubs merged in 1922, becoming the club, Unión Deportiva Española. The club operated as titular team in the Estadio Santa Laura. In the first seasons of the club, Unión Deportiva Española participated in the championship of the Asociación de Fútbol de Santiago. Estadio Santa Laura is a Association football, football stadium in Independencia, Chile, Independencia, Santiago, Chile. It is the home stadium of Unión Española. The stadium holds 19,887 people and was built in 1922. It is a multi-use stadium, also used for concerts. Deep Purple incident On February 27, 1997, English rock band Deep Purple performed at the stadium, this being the first time they performed in Chile. While performing the song "Fireball (Deep Purple song), Fireball", the concert was marred by the collapse of the control tower. Nobody died, but approximately 44 people were injured. Magallanes is a Chilean football club based in San Bernardo, Chile. They play in the Primera B de Chile, after being relegated from the Chilean Primera División in 2023. History The club was on October 27, 1897, with the name Atlético Escuela Normal F.C. In 1933 they became the first national champions of Chile. They won a hat trick of titles in the formative years of Chilean football (1933, 1934 and 1935) but their last major title came in 1938. Luis Alberto Santibáñez Díaz (7 February 1936 – 5 September 2008) was a Chilean football manager. As a team coach he won the Chilean title four times, once with Unión San Felipe (1971) and three times with Unión Española (1973, 1975, and 1977). He served as manager of the Chile national football team between 1977 and 1982, which included qualification for the 1982 FIFA World Cup in Spain. The CONMEBOL Libertadores, also known as Copa Libertadores de América (), is an annual continental club football competition organized by CONMEBOL since 1960. It is the highest level of competition in South American club football. The tournament is named after the '' Libertadores'' (Spanish and Portuguese for ''liberators''), the leaders of the Spanish American wars of independence and Brazilian Independence, so a literal translation of its former name into English is "''Liberators of America Cup''". The competition has had several formats over its lifetime. Initially, only the champions of the South American leagues participated.
