University Of Pau And The Adour Region
The University of Pau and the Adour Region ( French: ''L'Université de Pau et des Pays de l'Adour'', often known by the initialism ''UPPA'') is a multi-site, public university located in southwestern France. Founded in 1972, it is based in Pau (''département'' of Pyrénées-Atlantiques) but also in Anglet, Bayonne, Tarbes and Mont-de-Marsan in the Adour river basin. Coming administratively under the Academy of Bordeaux, it is the third largest university in southwestern France (after Bordeaux and Toulouse), with almost 14,000 students. Organisation History The university was formally established in 1970. However, it can trace its origins back to 1549 when the ''Collège des Arts'', an institute for the study of the humanities, was established in the royal town of Pau. More recently, the University of Bordeaux opened a branch in Pau in 1946 to teach legal subjects. Pau, Pyrénées-Atlantiques
Pau (; ; ) is a Communes of France, commune overlooking the Pyrenees, the prefecture of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques Departments of France, department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Regions of France, region of Southwestern France. The city is located in the heart of the former sovereign principality of Béarn, of which it was the capital from 1464. Pau lies on the Gave de Pau, and is located from the Atlantic Ocean and from Spain. This position gives it a striking panorama across the mountain range of the Pyrenees, especially from its landmark "Boulevard des Pyrénées", as well as the hillsides of Jurançon AOC, Jurançon. Pierre Léon
Pierre R. Léon (March 12, 1926 – September 11, 2013) was a French-Canadian linguist and writer. Life and career Léon was born in Ligré, Touraine, France, on March 12, 1926. He received a PhD from the University of Besançon in 1960 and a Doctor of Arts from the Sorbonne in 1972, where he also worked as an assistant professor. He was a research professor at the University of Besançon and taught at the University of Pau. He went on to teach at Ohio University and then at the University of Toronto, gaining professor emeritus status there. He founded the academic journals ''Studia Phonetica'', ''3L'' and ''Information et Communication''. At U of T, he founded and headed the laboratory of phonetics research in the department of French Studies. He has written several important books on French linguistics. Manuel Tuñón De Lara
Manuel Tuñón de Lara (1915–1997) was a Spanish historian. Life Born in Madrid on 8 September 1915. He earned law degree from the University of Madrid in 1936. In 1932 he had joined the Communist Youth Union, in 1937 becoming director of the cadre school of the Unified Socialist Youth, and earning a place on the central committee. At the end of the Spanish Civil War he was interned in a concentration camp. In 1946 he fled to Paris to escape persecution for his membership in the Union of Free Intellectuals. In Paris he completed his studies in history and authored numerous articles, which appeared in various Communist-affiliated publications throughout the world. In 1964 he became a professor and chair of Spanish history and Spanish literature at the University of Pau, where from 1970 to 1980 he organized the ''Colloquiums on the Contemporary History of Spain'', which encouraged the study of social history and served as a focal point of discussion and debate, attractin ... The ''Times Higher Education World University Rankings'', often referred to as the THE Rankings, is the annual publication of university rankings by the ''Times Higher Education'' magazine. The publisher had collaborated with Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) to publish the joint ''Times Higher Education–QS World University Rankings, THE-QS World University Rankings'' from 2004 to 2009 before it turned to Thomson Reuters for a new ranking system from 2010 to 2013. In 2014, the magazine signed an agreement with Elsevier to provide it with the data used in compiling its annual rankings. The publication includes global rankings of universities, including by subject and reputation. Quick Restaurants is an originally Belgian chain of hamburger fast food restaurants currently based in Bobigny, Seine-Saint-Denis, France.
