University Golf Club
The University Golf Club is a public golf club located in Pacific Spirit Regional Park near the city of Vancouver, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and the University of British Columbia. It is owned and operated by Musqueam Capital Corporation. The land was previously owned by UBC since 2003 when it was acquired from the province and leased to course owner David Ho (businessman), David Ho since 1990 History of the club University Golf Club was designed by A.V. Macan, and was opened as a public course in 1929 by John Boyd. It was originally named Westward Ho!, but became known to the public by its current name in 1985. The project was originally estimated to have cost little more than $70,000 to $80,000 to complete. Pacific Spirit Regional Park
Pacific Spirit Regional Park is a park located in Point Grey to the west of the city of Vancouver, British Columbia. Located in Electoral Area A, it surrounds the University of British Columbia Vancouver campus on the shores of Georgia Strait in the Pacific Ocean. Most of Pacific Spirit Park is in the University Endowment Lands, though a portion of the shoreline around Wreck Beach is not part of any organized local government. Pacific Spirit Park was formerly owned by the British Columbia government, which in 1989 transferred the lands to Metro Vancouver to operate as a park. The park contains over 55 km of walking/hiking trails, 34 km of which are designated multi-use and available for cycling and horseback riding as well. Geoffrey Cornish
Geoffrey St John Cornish (August 6, 1914 – February 10, 2012) was a golf course architect, author, and a fellow of the American Society of Golf Course Architects. He designed over 200 courses, including 9-hole additions, around the world. Early life and education Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Cornish received a bachelor's degree from the University of British Columbia and a Master's from the University of Massachusetts, both in agronomy. His interest in golf course architecture was aroused upon graduation in 1935, when he was hired to evaluate soils and find topsoil on the Capilano Golf Club, then under construction in West Vancouver, for Canadian architect Stanley Thompson. Cornish then continued his training for four years with Thompson before becoming Head Greenkeeper at St. Charles Country Club, Winnipeg.
