The United States Court for the Indian Territory was a Federal Court of the United States in Indian Territory between 1889 and November 16, 1907, the day Oklahoma was admitted as a U.S. state. History In 1889, the United States Congress created a federal court with jurisdiction over Indian Territory. The court heard criminal cases not punishable by death or hard labor and civil cases were a U.S. citizen was party. In 1891, the Judiciary Act of 1891 made the appellate court for Indian Territory the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals. The courts were abolished with Oklahoma statehood on November 16, 1907. William Yancey Lewis (August 24, 1861 - March 10, 1915) was an American judge who served on the United States Court for the Indian Territory between 1895 and 1897. Biography William Yancey Lewis was born on August 24, 1861, to Everett Lewis and Alice Strickland in Gonzales, Texas. After attending public schools in Gonzales, he received an appointment to West Point, but failed his math exam. Louis Sulzbacher (May 10, 1842 – January 17, 1915) was the first continental American appointed as Associate Justice of the newly created Supreme Court of Puerto Rico in 1900. William Ridgway Lawrence (January 14, 1840 – July 31, 1923) was an American judge who served on the United States Court for the Indian Territory between 1904 and Oklahoma statehood on November 16, 1907. The F/V ''Charles W'', also known as Annie J Larsen, is a historic fishing schooner anchored in Petersburg, Alaska. At the time of its retirement in 2000, it was the oldest fishing vessel in the fishing fleet of Southeast Alaska, and the only known wooden fishing vessel in the entire state still in active service. Launched in 1907, she was first used in the halibut fisheries of Puget Sound and the Bering Sea as the ''Annie J Larsen''. In 1925 she was purchased by the Alaska Glacier Seafood Company, refitted for shrimp trawling, and renamed ''Charles W'' in honor of owner Karl Sifferman's father. The company was one of the pioneers of the local shrimp fishery, a business it began to phase out due to increasing competition in the 1970s.
