United Kingdom In The Eurovision Song Contest 1972
The United Kingdom was represented at the Eurovision Song Contest 1972 with the song "Beg, Steal or Borrow", written by Tony Cole, Steve Wolfe, and Graeme Hall, and performed by The New Seekers. The British participating broadcaster, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), selected its entry through a national final, after having previously selected the performers internally. In addition, the BBC was also the host broadcaster and staged the event at the Usher Hall in Edinburgh, after the winner of the , (TMC) from , opted not to host the event. Before Eurovision Artist selection Contemporary press reports suggested that Cliff Richard was the first artist selected to represent the UK in 1972 by the BBC, but he was already committed to a concert on the date of the contest - 25 March 1972 - and was thus unavailable. Roy Wood
Roy Wood (born 8 November 1946) is an English musician, singer and songwriter. He was particularly successful in the 1960s and 1970s as member and co-founder of the Move, Electric Light Orchestra and Wizzard. Wood formed the Move in 1965, and had hits including " Flowers in the Rain". While the Move were still together, Wood, along with his band colleagues Jeff Lynne and Bev Bevan, founded Electric Light Orchestra (ELO), which was later to gain major commercial success. After increasing tensions, Wood left ELO in 1972 and formed a new group, Wizzard, who had seven hits, including Wood's most regularly broadcast song, " I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day". Peter Murray James, (born 19 September 1925), known professionally as Pete Murray, is a British radio and television presenter and actor. Thomas Kelman Fleming, FRSAMD (29 June 1927 – 18 April 2010) was a Scottish actor, director, and poet, and a television and radio commentator for the BBC.
