The Union of Democratic Forces (, СДС/SDS) is a political party in Bulgaria, founded in 1989 as a union of several political organizations in opposition to the communist government. The Union was transformed into a single unified party with the same name. The SDS is a member of the European People's Party (EPP). In the 1990s the party had the largest membership in the country, with one million members, but has since splintered into a number of small parties totaling no more than 40,000 members. The SDS proper had 12,000 members in 2016. History Dissident groups formed under the faltering regime of Todor Zhivkov in the late 1980s were the basis for the Union. The Union of the Democratic Forces (''Union des forces démocratiques'', UFD) was an electoral coalition set up in 1958 by many trade unions, political, and associative organizations to unite the non-communist left opposed to the return of General Charles de Gaulle to power and the French Fifth Republic. It was also strongly opposed to the 1958 constitutional referendum, also put forward by de Gaulle. All except two of its candidates were defeated in the 1958 legislative election. The Union of Democratic Forces of Guinea (, UFDG) is a social-liberal political party in Guinea. It should not be confused with the liberal Union of Republican Forces which has a similar name. The party was founded in 1991 by a number of opposition parties and groups. In October 2002 it was joined by a section of Union for Progress and Renewal under the leadership of Bâ Mamadou, which unlike the majority of their party wanted to boycott the 2002 parliamentary election. Mamadou Ba was subsequently elected as President of UFDG. The party affiliated to the Republican Front for Democratic Change alliance, which intended to field a candidate in the 2003 presidential election. Starting in 2007, the presidency of the party has been held by Cellou Dalein Diallo. The Union of Democratic Forces-New Era (''Union des Forces Démocratiques-Ère Nouvelle'') was a political party in Mauritania, founded in 1991, and banned and dissolved in 2000. The Secretary-general of the party was Ahmed Ould Daddah. In February 1997 the five-party Front of Opposition Parties (FPO), including the UFD-EN, was formed; it boycotted the December 1997 presidential election, in which President Maaouya Ould Sid'Ahmed Taya was easily re-elected. The party was weakened by a number of splits during its existence. In 1998, a faction of the party led by Mohamed Ould Maouloud, which was known as the UFD/B and later became the Union of the Forces of Progress, split from the faction under Daddah's leadership. The UFD-EN under Daddah's leadership boycotted the January 1999 local election, in which the faction under Ould Maouloud participated.
