Union Automatic Revolver
The Union automatic revolver (also known as the Lefever revolver) was a .32 caliber revolver. It was designed by Charles F. Lefever (, 1909) and manufactured by the Union Firearms Company of Toledo, Ohio. It was produced in limited numbers until 1912 when production ceased, marking the exit of Union Firearms Company from the handgun business. It was similar in action to the Webley Fosbery automatic revolver, but had a shroud that protected the recoiling upper half from contact with the firer's hand.http://fosbery.tripod.com/GVF.html Before its demise, Union Firearms also manufactured the Riefgraber automatic pistol, patented by J.J. An automatic revolver also known as semi-automatic revolver, is a revolver that uses the recoil energy of firing for cocking the hammer and revolving the cylinder, rather than using manual operations to perform these actions. Despite the misnomer "automatic", such revolvers are actually '' semi-automatic''. The weapon will not continue discharge continuously; the shooter must manually operate the trigger to discharge each shot. Examples of genuine semi-automatic revolvers are extremely uncommon, and the term is inaccurately applied to break-open revolvers with a mechanical linkage ejector that automatically empties spent (and unspent) casings from the cylinder upon opening of the breech. The .32 S&W cartridge (also known as the .32 S&W Short) was introduced in 1878 for Smith & Wesson pocket revolvers. It was originally designed as a black powder cartridge. The .32 S&W was offered to the public as a light defense cartridge for " card table" distances. Design Originally designed by the Union Metallic Cartridge Company (UMC) as a black powder cartridge using nine grains of black powder, the round has been loaded with smokeless powder exclusively since 1940. It is low-powered and perfect for use in small frame concealable revolvers and derringers. The round remained popular in the United States and Europe long after the firearms chambered for it were out of production. Recoil operated firearms use the energy of recoil to cycle the action, as opposed to gas operation or blowback operation using the pressure of the propellant gas.
