''Unheimliche Geschichten'' ( ''Uncanny Stories''), also known as ''Grausige Nächte'' ( ''Nights of Terror'') or ''Eerie Tales'', is a 1919 German silent film, silent anthology film directed by Richard Oswald and starring Conrad Veidt, Reinhold Schünzel, and Anita Berber. The film is divided into five segments: "The Apparition" (based on a story by Anselm Heine), "The Hand" (based on a story by Robert Liebmann), "The Black Cat" (based on The Black Cat (short story), the short story by Edgar Allan Poe), "The Suicide Club" (based on The Suicide Club (short story collection), the short stories by Robert Louis Stevenson) and "Der Spuk" ("The Spectre", an original work by Oswald). Richard Oswald
Richard Oswald (5 November 1880 – 11 September 1963) was an Austrian film director, producer, screenwriter, and father of German-American film director Gerd Oswald. Early life and career Richard Oswald, born in Vienna as Richard W. Ornstein, began his career as an actor on the Viennese stage. He made his film directorial debut at age 34 with ''The Iron Cross'' (1914) and worked a number of times for Jules Greenbaum. In 1916, Oswald set up his own production company in Germany, writing and directing most of his films himself. ''Unheimliche Geschichten'' ( ''Uncanny Stories''), titled ''The Living Dead'' in English, is a 1932 German comedy horror film, directed by the film director Richard Oswald, starring Paul Wegener, and produced by Gabriel Pascal. It is a remake of Oswald's 1919 film of the same name. The story is a merging of three separate short stories, Edgar Allan Poe's " The Black Cat," " The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether" and Robert Louis Stevenson's '' The Suicide Club'', set within a frame story of a reporter's hunt for a mad scientist. It is a black comedy revisiting many of the classic themes of the horror genre. It was Paul Wegener's first talking movie. The ''Berliner Tageblatt'' or ''BT'' was a German language newspaper published in Berlin from 1872 to 1939. Along with the '' Frankfurter Zeitung'', it became one of the most important liberal German newspapers of its time. History The ''Berliner Tageblatt'' was first published by Rudolf Mosse as an advertising paper on 1 January 1872, but developed into a liberal newspaper. During World War I, the Berliner Tageblatt published disinformation on April 19, 1915, regarding the alleged use of gas by British forces. This was part of a broader German propaganda effort to accuse the Allies of employing chemical weapons, thereby deflecting attention from their own plans to use poison gas in the upcoming attack at Ypres. Bernhard Goetzke
Bernhard Goetzke (5 June 1884 – 7 October 1964) was a German stage and film actor, renowned for his contributions to German silent cinema. Born in Danzig, German Empire (now Gdańsk, Poland), Goetzke began his acting career in theaters across Hagen, Düsseldorf, Dresden, and Berlin. Georg John (born Georg Jacobsohn; 23 July 1879 – 18 November 1941) was a German stage and film actor. Early life Georg Jacobsohn was born into a Jewish household in Schmiegel, Province of Posen, Imperial Germany. Career John began his career around 1900 in smaller stages and traveling theatres.
