''Underbelly'' is an Australian television true crime-drama series which first aired on the Nine Network between 13 February 2008 and 1 September 2013, before being revived on 3 April 2022. Each series is based on real-life events. There have been six full series, with season 7 being a miniseries. A 2014 series titled ''Fat Tony & Co'' is a sequel to the first series but is not branded under the ''Underbelly'' title. Synopsis The first series is based on the book ''Leadbelly: Inside Australia's Underworld'', by journalists John Silvester and Andrew Rule. The series also borrows the title 'Underbelly' from a previously successful series of 12 true crime compilations by the same authors. The first series of Australian crime television drama series ''Underbelly (TV series), Underbelly'' originally aired from 13 February 2008 to 7 May 2008 on the Nine Network and is loosely based on the real events of the 1995–2004 Melbourne gangland killings, gangland war in Melbourne. It depicts the key players in Melbourne's criminal underworld, including the Carlton Crew and their rival, Carl Williams (criminal), Carl Williams. Underbelly Limited
Underbelly is a live events producer and venue operator, known as one of the "Big Four" venue operators at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. From its roots as a Fringe venue, the company has expanded to include a festival on London's South Bank and seasonal events in Edinburgh and elsewhere. History Underbelly was founded in 2000 by directors Ed Bartlam and Charlie Wood to operate one venue at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. In 2001, Underbelly Limited was formed to turn the Underbelly venue into a professional operation. Over the years, Underbelly's operations have expanded beyond the Cowgate, to include a hub space known as the Udderbelly pasture in George Square and a Circus Hub on The Meadows, as well as a hub in Bristo Square. Fat Tony & Co
''Fat Tony & Co.'' is a nine-episode Australian television series focusing on Tony Mokbel and covers the manhunt which lasted 18 months and dismantled a drug empire. It premiered on 23 February 2014 and concluded on 6 April 2014 on the Nine Network. It is technically a part of the '' Underbelly franchise'', with various actors reprising their role from previous series. Production Conception ''Fat Tony & Co.'' has been marketed as a sequel to the first series of '' Underbelly'', however due to changes in funding with Screen Australia it was not branded as an ''Underbelly'' series. ''Fat Tony and Co'' actually runs chronologically alongside of ''Underbelly'', with the storyline being told from the point of view of Mokbel. ''Notes from the Underbelly'' is an American sitcom that was aired on American Broadcasting Company, ABC from 2007 to 2008, originally debuting as a mid-season replacement. The series is based on the 2005 novel of the same name by Risa Green, and was produced by Eric and Kim Tannenbaum (previously producing ''Two and a Half Men'') for Warner Bros. Television. The title is a parody of Fyodor Dostoevsky, Dostoevsky's novel ''Notes from Underground''. Originally, it was supposed to debut on October 5, 2006, along with ''Big Day'', but ABC made a last-minute change in its schedule by moving ''Ugly Betty'' to Thursday, thus replacing both sitcoms. Joseph Theodore Leslie "Squizzy" Taylor (29 June 1888 – 27 October 1927) was an Australian gangster from Melbourne. He appeared repeatedly and sometimes prominently in Melbourne news media because of suspicions, formal accusations and some convictions related to a 1919 gang war, to his absconding from bail and hiding from the police in 1921–22, and to his involvement in a robbery where a bank manager was murdered in 1923. Taylor enjoyed a fearsome reputation in 1920s Melbourne. A "spiv", described as the Australian equivalent of the 'American bootleggers', his crimes ranged from pickpocketing, assault and shopbreaking to armed robbery and murder.
