"Uncomfortably Numb" is a song by the American emo band American Football. It was released on January 22, 2019, as the second single from their third self-titled album. The track features Mike Kinsella and Paramore vocalist Hayley Williams alternating verses of a narrative. This collaboration marks a radical change in the band's sound from their mathy emo roots to a dreamier, more atmospheric sound with lyrical maturation and noticeably refined production quality. The song has received critical acclaim and is considered an album highlight. American Football (band)
American Football (Stylised as americ anfootball) is an American Midwest emo band from Urbana, Illinois, originally active from 1997 to 2000. They reformed in 2014. The band was formed by guitarist, bassist and singer Mike Kinsella (formerly of Cap'n Jazz and Joan of Arc and currently of Owen), guitarist Steve Holmes (also a member of the Geese), and drummer and trumpet player Steve Lamos (formerly of the One Up Downstairs, one-time member of the Firebird Band and Edward Burch & the Staunch Characters, and currently of the Geese and DMS). Lamos left the band in 2021 but rejoined in 2023. Despite the group's short initial lifespan, their self-titled debut album became one of the most acclaimed emo and math rock records of its era. ''American Football'', also known retrospectively as ''LP1'', is the debut studio album by the American Emo music, emo band American Football (band), American Football. It was released on September 14, 1999, on the record label Polyvinyl Record Co., Polyvinyl. At the time of recording, the group comprised Mike Kinsella on vocals and guitar, Steve Holmes on guitar, and Steve Lamos on drums. ''LP1'' was recorded in May 1999 at Private Studios in Urbana, Illinois, with production from Brendan Gamble. Although ''LP1'' received positive reviews from critics and highly performed at US college radio stations, the band split up soon after its release because the band members no longer lived in the same city. American football, referred to simply as football in the United States and Canada and also known as gridiron football, is a team sport played by two teams of eleven players on a rectangular field with goalposts at each end.
