Ukrainian Canadian Committee
The Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC; ; French: ) is a nonprofit umbrella organization of Ukrainian-Canadian political, cultural, and religious organizations founded in 1940. History Pre-UCC Ukrainians immigrated to Canada at the turn of the 20th century, settling mostly in rural areas of the prairie provinces. Given the church services were required all the more by the new settlers, and in 1918 the autonomous Ukrainian Greek-Orthodox Church of Canada was established. Between 1903 and 1920 Ukrainian Canadians started many organizations and institutions (Ridna Shkola, Taras Shevchenko Institute in Edmonton, Andrey Sheptycky Ukrainian Bursa in Winnipeg among others). With the outbreak of WWI many Ukrainian immigrants were detained being deemed "enemy aliens" as they arrived from countries at war with Canada. Yuri Shymko
Yuri Shymko (, born September 6, 1940) is a former politician in Ontario, Canada. He was a Progressive Conservative Party of Canada, Progressive Conservative Party member of the House of Commons of Canada from 1978 to 1979 representing the downtown Toronto riding of Parkdale (federal electoral district), Parkdale. From 1981 to 1987, he served in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario representing the riding of High Park-Swansea. From 2013-2017, Shymko served as President of the International Council in Support of Ukraine (ICSU) which coordinates Ukrainian NGOs in North America, Europe, South America, and Australia. In 2008, Yuri Shymko received one of Ukraine's highest state honours when President Viktor Yushchenko awarded him the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise at a public ceremony in Kyiv. Valentina Kuryliw (July 22, 1945, Mannheim city in Baden-Württemberg, Germany) is a historian and educator specializing in the Ukrainian Holodomor genocide of 1932–1933. Now retired, she served as the Department Head of History and Social Sciences for the Toronto District School Board with over 35 years of teaching experience. She is a methodologist, worked with the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) at the University of Toronto training young history, law and sociology teachers and evaluating their achievements.
