USS William P. Biddle (APA-8)
USS ''William P. Biddle'' (APA-8) was a in service with the United States Navy from 1941 to 1946. She was scrapped in 1957. History Initially laid-down for the British government as ''War Surf'', the ship that ultimately became known as ''William P. Biddle'' was completed in 1919 as the single-screw, steel-hulled freighter ''Eclipse''. Built by the Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation, of Alameda, California, under a United States Shipping Board contract, the former ''War Surf'' was requisitioned by the United States government before she was delivered to the United Kingdom and thus never actually carried her British name. Commercial service After a period of about 10 years under the ownership of the Shipping Board, ''Eclipse'' was acquired by the Baltimore Mail Steamship Company, of Baltimore, Maryland, in about 1930. Federal Shipbuilding And Drydock Company
The Federal Shipbuilding and Drydock Company was a United States shipyard, active from 1917 to 1948. It was founded during World War I to build ships for the United States Shipping Board. During World War II, it built ships as part of the U.S. Government's Emergency Shipbuilding program. Operated by a subsidiary of the United States Steel Corporation, the shipyard was located at Kearny Point where the mouth of the Hackensack River meets Newark Bay in the Port of New York and New Jersey. The shipyard site is now part of River Terminal, a massive distribution facility that is partially a foreign trade zone. United States Shipping Board
The United States Shipping Board (USSB) was established as an emergency agency by the 1916 Shipping Act (39 Stat. 729), on September 7, 1916. The United States Shipping Board's task was to increase the number of US ships supporting the World War I efforts. United States Shipping Board program ended on March 2, 1934. Initiation The United States' maritime position had been eroding for decades with some Congressional concern, some remedies actually worsening the situation, with European shipping companies dominating overseas trade and just over 10% of the value of trade carried in U.S. owned ships.
