USS Montgomery (1861)
The third USS ''Montgomery'' was a wooden screw steamboat, steamer in the Union Navy during the American Civil War. ''Montgomery'' was built at New York City, New York in 1858; chartered by the Navy in May 1861; purchased at New York 28 August 1861; and commissioned 27 May 1861 at New York, Comdr. O. S. Glisson in command. Service history From June to November, ''Montgomery'' blockaded Apalachicola, Florida, off which she captured ''Finland'', lacking proper papers, 29 August. In November, she began patrolling the coast from Washington to Cape Fear River, and on the 8th had a running fight with CSS Tallahassee, ''Tallahassee'', the Confederate States of America, Confederate iron propeller. East Gulf Blockading Squadron
The Union blockade in the American Civil War was a naval strategy by the United States to prevent the Confederacy from trading. The blockade was proclaimed by President Abraham Lincoln in April 1861, and required the monitoring of of Atlantic and Gulf coastline, including 12 major ports, notably New Orleans and Mobile. Those blockade runners fast enough to evade the Union Navy could carry only a small fraction of the supplies needed. They were operated largely by British and French citizens, making use of neutral ports such as Havana, Nassau and Bermuda. The Union commissioned around 500 ships, which destroyed or captured about 1,500 blockade runners over the course of the war. The blockade was successful in blocking 95% of cotton exports from the South compared to pre-war levels, devaluing its currency and severely damaging its economy. The first USS ''Arizona'' was an iron-hulled, side-wheel merchant steamship. Seized by the Confederate States of America in 1862 during the American Civil War, she was captured later the same year by the United States Navy. San Luis Pass (Galveston Island)
San Luis Pass is a passage of water on the Texas Gulf Coast of the United States. It connects the sheltered waters of West Bay to the open Gulf of Mexico between Galveston Island and San Luis Island. Fishermen and swimmers have been killed in the Pass' treacherous waters. The Gulf of Mexico-West Bay pass transitions vast volumes of seawater.
