USS LST-141
USS ''LST-141'' was an built for the United States Navy in World War II. Like most of the ships of her class, she was not named and known only by her designation. ''LST-141'' was laid down on 24 November 1943 at Ambridge, Pennsylvania, by the American Bridge Company; launched on 16 January 1944; and commissioned on 16 February 1944. During World War II, ''LST-141'' was assigned to the European Theatre. She sailed across the Atlantic as part of Convoy UGS 36 in April 1944, and took part in the invasion of southern France in August and September 1944. On 3 December 1944, ''LST-141'' was damaged when she ran aground at Bizerte, Tunisia. On 5 December, while towing , ''LST-141'' encountered a gale off Palermo, Sicily. Operation Dragoon (initially Operation Anvil) was the code name for the landing operation of the Allied invasion of Provence ( Southern France) on 15August 1944. Despite initially designed to be executed in conjunction with Operation Overlord, the Allied landing in Normandy, the lack of available resources led to a cancellation of the second landing. By July 1944 the landing was reconsidered, as the clogged-up ports in Normandy did not have the capacity to adequately supply the Allied forces. Ambridge is a borough in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, United States. Incorporated in 1905 as a company town by the American Bridge Company, Ambridge is located 16 miles (25 km) northwest of Pittsburgh, along the Ohio River. The population was 6,960 at the 2020 census.
