USS Irex (SS-482)
USS ''Irex'' (SS-482), a , was the only ship of the United States Navy to be named for the irex, one of the oceanic fishes belonging to the family ''carangidae''. Construction and commissioning ''Irex''′s keel was laid down on 2 October 1944 by the Portsmouth Navy Yard in Kittery, Maine. She was launched on 26 January 1945, sponsored by Mrs. Allen J. Ellender, wife of Senator Ellender of Louisiana, and commissioned on 14 May 1945. Service history 1945-1956 After shakedown in the New London, Connecticut, area, ''Irex'' sailed for the Pacific via the Panama Canal. While she was in the Canal Zone, the war ended. Naval Submarine Base New London is the primary United States Navy East Coast submarine base, also known as the "Home of the Submarine Force." It is located in Groton, Connecticut directly across the Thames River from its namesake city of New London. History In 1868, the State of Connecticut gave the Navy of land along the Thames River in Groton to build a Naval Station. Due to a lack of federal funding, it was not until 1872 that two brick buildings and a T-shaped pier were constructed and officially declared a Navy Yard. A submarine snorkel is a device which allows a submarine to operate submerged while still taking in air from above the surface. British Royal Navy personnel often refer to it as the snort. A concept devised by Dutch engineers, it was widely used on German U-boats during the last year of World War II and known to them as a ''Schnorchel''.
