USS ''Gregory'' (DD-802) was a of the United States Navy, the second Navy ship named for Rear Admiral Francis Gregory, Francis H. Gregory (1780–1866), who served from the War of 1812 to the American Civil War, Civil War. Francis Gregory
Francis Hoyt Gregory (October 9, 1789 – October 4, 1866) was an officer in the United States Navy during the War of 1812 through to the American Civil War, Civil War, serving then as a Rear admiral (United States), rear admiral. Early life Gregory was born in Norwalk, Connecticut, the son of Moses Gregory and Esther Hoyt. He was the third great-grandson of John Gregory (settler), John Gregory, founding settler of Norwalk. While in the American merchant marine, he was impressed by the United Kingdom, British in an incident typical of those which led in part to the War of 1812. Operation Downfall was the proposed Allied plan for the invasion of the Japanese home islands near the end of World War II. The planned operation was canceled when Japan surrendered following the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Soviet declaration of war, and the invasion of Manchuria. The operation had two parts: Operation Olympic and Operation Coronet. Set to begin in November 1945, Operation Olympic was intended to capture the southern third of the southernmost main Japanese island, Kyūshū, with the recently captured island of Okinawa to be used as a staging area.
