USS Gloria Dalton (IX-70)
USS ''Gloria Dalton'' (IX-70), an unclassified miscellaneous vessel, was the only ship of the United States Navy to be given that name. Her keel was laid down in 1925 by Craig Shipbuilding Company, in Long Beach, California. She was purchased by the Navy 11 May 1942 and commissioned on 30 May 1942. ''Gloria Dalton'' performed coastal patrol duties from her home port San Diego, under the Commandant, 11th Naval District, until 16 November 1942, then under Commander, Western Sea Frontier. To support the World War I demand for ships Craig Shipbuilding shipyard switched over to military construction and built: US Navy Submarines and Cargo Ships. Craig Shipbuilding was started in 1906 by John F. Craig. John F. Craig had worked in Toledo, Ohio with his father, John Craig (1838-1934), and Blythe Craig, both shipbuilders, their first ship was built in 1864 at Craig Shipbuilding Toledo. John F. Western Sea Frontier
Sea Frontiers were several, now disestablished, commands of the United States Navy as areas of defense against enemy vessels, especially submarines, along the U.S. coasts. They existed from 1 July 1941 until in some cases the 1970s. The ''Naval Vessel Register'' (NVR) is the official inventory of ships and service craft in custody of or titled by the United States Navy. The War Shipping Administration (WSA) was a World War II emergency war agency of the US government, tasked to purchase and operate the civilian shipping tonnage the United States needed for fighting the war.
