USS Chateau Thierry
''Chateau Thierry'' was a troop transport that served with the US Army and US Navy. Originally built for service during the First World War, the ship arrived too late to see service in that war, but operated as an army transport, USAT ''Chateau Thierry'', between the wars. With America's entry into World War II, the vessel was transferred to the US Navy and redesignated USS ''Chateau Thierry'' (AP-31). In 1943 she was transferred back to the Army and converted into a hospital ship, USAHS ''Chateau Thierry'', in which role she was to serve for the remainder of the war. ''Chateau Thierry'' was built in 1921 by the American International Shipbuilding Corporation at Hog Island, Pennsylvania. She was transferred from the Army to the Navy 15 July 1941, and commissioned into the latter 6 August 1941. Hog Island, Pennsylvania
Hog Island is the historic name of an area southeast of Tinicum Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania, Tinicum Township, Pennsylvania, United States, along the Delaware River, to the west of the mouth of the Schuylkill River. Part of Philadelphia International Airport now occupies Hog Island and the infilled channel behind it. It was the site of a major shipyard during World War I; sandwiches made for workers there may be the origin of the name "hoagie". The New York Port of Embarkation (NYPOE) was a United States Army command responsible for the movement of troops and supplies from the United States to overseas commands. Bluie West One
Bluie West One, later known as Narsarsuaq Air Base and Narsarsuaq Airport, was built on a glacial moraine at what is now the village of Narsarsuaq, near the southern tip of Greenland. Construction by the United States Army began in June 1941. The first aircraft landed there in January 1942, as a link in the North Atlantic air ferry route in World War II. The base had a peak population of about 4,000 American servicemen, and it is estimated that some 10,000 aircraft landed there en route to the war in Europe and North Africa. Argentia ( ) is a Canadian commercial seaport and industrial park located in the Town of Placentia, Newfoundland and Labrador.
