USS Chandeleur (AV-10)
USS ''Chandeleur'' (AV-10), a seaplane tender, was launched on 29 November 1941 by Western Pipe and Steel Company, San Francisco, California, under a United States Maritime Commission, Maritime Commission contract; transferred to the United States Navy, U.S. Navy 19 November 1942; and commissioned the same day. Operational history Cargo and tender operations From 15 January to 9 May 1943, ''Chandeleur'' supported Pacific Ocean theater of World War II, South Pacific bases and operations by carrying cargo from San Diego to Efate, Espiritu Santo, Samoa, and Nouméa. She cleared San Diego 3 June with cargo for Pearl Harbor, Midway Atoll, Midway, and Wallis, and arrived at Espiritu Santo 1 July. Here she provided tender services to, and served as base for, VP-33, Patrol Squadron 71 (VP-71) until 13 October. Chandeleur Sound
The Chandeleur Sound is a Sound (geography), sound that lies between Louisiana, mainland Louisiana and the Chandeleur Islands in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana, Saint Bernard Parish. It is situated east of Breton Sound and south of Mississippi Sound. It was formed by the mixing of the Gulf of Mexico and the waters of the Mississippi River, protected by the Islands. Climate and geography Similarly to the rest of Louisiana, the Sound experiences a Subtropics, semitropical climate. The average water temperatures range from 70˚F to 84˚F (2129°C) by month and the humidity ranges between 73% and 84%. Due to the humidity, clouds often form overhead, reducing the amount of daily sunlight that the area receives to as little as 4 hours. VPB-202 was a Patrol Bombing Squadron of the U.S. Navy. The squadron was established as Patrol Squadron Two Hundred Two (VP-202) on 15 September 1942, redesignated Patrol Bombing Squadron Two Hundred Two (VPB-202) on 1 October 1944 and disestablished on 20 June 1945. New Hebrides
New Hebrides, officially the New Hebrides Condominium () and named after the Hebrides in Scotland, was the colonial name for the island group in the South Pacific Ocean that is now Vanuatu. Native people had inhabited the islands for three thousand years before the first Europeans arrived in 1606 from a Spanish expedition led by Portuguese navigator Pedro Fernandes de Queirós. The islands were named by Captain James Cook in 1774 and subsequently colonised by both the British and the French.
