USS ''Billfish'' (SSN-676), a Sturgeon class submarine, ''Sturgeon''-class attack submarine, was the second ship of the United States Navy to be named for the billfish, a name used for any fish, such as gar or Marlin, spearfish, with bill-shaped jaws. Billfish
The billfish are a group (Xiphioidea) of saltwater fish, saltwater predatory fish characterised by prominent pointed beak, bills (rostrum (anatomy), rostra), and by their large size; some are longer than . Extant billfish include sailfish and marlin, which make up the family Istiophoridae; and swordfish, sole member of the family Xiphiidae. They are often apex predators which feed on a wide variety of smaller fish, crustaceans and cephalopods. These two families are sometimes classified as belonging to the order (biology), order Istiophoriformes, a group which originated around 71 million years ago in the Late Cretaceous, with the two families divergent evolution, diverging around 15 million years ago in the Late Miocene. ''K-279'' was the first Project 667B ''Murena'' (also known by the NATO reporting name Delta I) ballistic missile submarine of the Soviet Navy. Development of Project 667B began in 1965. Her keel was laid down in 1971 by Sevmash at the Severodvinsk shipyard. She was launched in January 1972, and commissioned in the Soviet Northern Fleet on 22 December 1972.
