USCGC ''Red Wood'' (WLM-685) is a coastal USCG seagoing buoy tender, buoy tender that was designed, built, owned, and operated by the United States Coast Guard. She was Ceremonial ship launching, launched in 1964 and homeported at New London, Connecticut for most of her career. In March 1996 she moved to Philadelphia where she replaced the decommissioned . Her primary mission while based in New London was maintaining over 200 aids to navigation from Watch Hill, Rhode Island to Execution Rocks Light, Execution Rocks at the west end of Long Island Sound. She also provided fuel and water to several lighthouses including the Falkner Island Lighthouse. Her secondary missions included search and rescue, light icebreaking, law enforcement, and U.S. Coast Guard environmental protection, marine environmental protection. The draft or draught of a ship is a determined depth of the vessel below the waterline, measured vertically to its hull's lowest—its propellers, or keel, or other reference point. Draft varies according to the loaded condition of the ship. A deeper draft means the ship will have greater vertical depth below the waterline. Length overall (LOA, o/a, o.a. or oa) is the maximum length of a vessel's hull measured parallel to the waterline. This length is important while docking the ship. It is the most commonly used way of expressing the size of a ship, and is also used for calculating the cost of a marina berth (for example, £2.50 per metre LOA). Edward Alexander Garmatz (February 7, 1903 – July 22, 1986), a Democrat, was a U.S. Congressman who represented the 3rd congressional district of Maryland from 1947 to 1973. Early life and career Born in Baltimore, Maryland; his father and maternal grandparents were German immigrants. Garmatz attended the public schools, including the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute.
