NNS ''Okpabana'' is a high endurance cutter which formerly served with the United States Coast Guard, U.S. Coast Guard as USCGC ''Gallatin'' (WHEC-721). Built at Avondale Shipyards near New Orleans, Louisiana, ''Gallatin'' was named for Albert Gallatin, the fourth and longest serving United States Secretary of the Treasury. ''Gallatin'' completed her final patrol 11 December 2013 and was decommissioned in 2014 before being transferred to the Nigerian Navy. Construction ''Gallatin'' was laid down at Avondale Shipyards on 17 April 1967, as the seventh ship of her class. She was launched on 18 November 1967 and was commissioned on 20 December 1968. The AN/SPS-40 is a United States Navy two-dimensional, long range air search radar that is capable of providing contact bearing and range. Combined diesel or gas (CODOG) is a type of propulsion system for ships that need a maximum speed that is considerably faster than their cruise speed, particularly warships like modern frigates or corvettes. For every propeller shaft there is one diesel engine for cruising speed and one geared gas turbine for high speed dashes. Both are connected to the shaft with clutches; only one system is driving the ship, in contrast to CODAG systems that can use the combined power output of both. The advantage of CODOG is a simpler gearing compared to CODAG, but it needs either more powerful or additional gas turbines to achieve the same maximum power output. Avondale Shipyard was an independent shipbuilding company, acquired by Litton Industries, in turn acquired by Northrop Grumman Corporation. In 2011, along with the former Ingalls Shipbuilding, the yard was part of Huntington Ingalls Industries. It closed in October 2014.
