Palestinian refugees are citizens of Mandatory Palestine, and their descendants, who fled or were expelled from their country, village or house over the course of the 1948 Palestine war and during the 1967 Six-Day War. 1948 Palestinian Expulsion And Flight
In the 1948 Palestine war, more than 700,000 Palestinian Arabs – about half of Mandatory Palestine's predominantly Arab population – fled from their homes or were expelled. Expulsions and attacks against Palestinians were carried out by the Zionist paramilitaries Haganah, Irgun, and Lehi, which merged to become the Israel Defense Forces after the establishment of Israel part way through the war. Philippe Lazzarini (born 1964) is a Swiss-Italian humanitarian who has been serving as Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) since 2020. Early life and education Lazzarini holds a Masters in Business Administration from the Faculty of Business and Economics of the University of Lausanne and a Bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Neuchâtel. Career Lazzarini started his international career in 1989 when he joined the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and served as delegate in multiple duty stations, including Southern Sudan, Lebanon, Jordan, and Gaza. Lazzarini then led the ICRC operations in Bosnia, Angola, and Rwanda. He served as Deputy Head of the ICRC Communications Department.
