U.S. Route 17 Alternate
U.S. Highway 17 Alternate (US 17 Alt.) is a alternate route of US 17 in South Carolina that travels between Pocotaligo and Georgetown. It has been four-laned in various segments since 1970. Route description US 17 Alt. starts at the northern terminus of the US 17/ US 21 concurrency near Pocotaligo as a two-lane highway. It heads north along US 21 through Yemassee, where it passes over CSX Transportation's Charleston Subdivision and then over South Carolina Highway 68 (SC 68). Due to the presence of a parallel railroad spur along the north side of SC 68, access to and from US 17 Alt./US 21 is only available from bidirectional on/offramps on the southwest and southeast corners of the bridge. The concurrency continues until US 21 splits off on its own to the northwest. Yemassee, South Carolina
Yemassee () is a town in Hampton and Beaufort counties in the U.S. state of South Carolina. The population was 1,080 at the 2020 census. Located in the South Carolina Lowcountry, Yemassee is divided by the county line between Hampton and Beaufort counties along the roadbed of the CSX railroad. Most of the town's population lies within Hampton County. South Carolina Highway 179
South Carolina Highway 179 (SC 179) is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of South Carolina. It travels from Little River to the North Carolina state line, near Calabash. Route description One of the shortest state highways in the state, SC 179 starts at U.S. Route 17 (US 17) in Little River and travels to the North Carolina state line. The route continues on as NC 179, connecting the towns of Calabash, Sunset Beach, Ocean Isle Beach and Shallotte. The entire route is two lanes wide with brief sections with a center turn lane. History The first SC 179 existed from 1932 to 1950, established as a renumbering of SC 178. It ran from US 17 east, through Jamestown, to the Charleston County line near Honey Hill.
