U.S. Global Malaria Coordinator
The Coordinator of United States Government Activities to Combat Malaria Globally, known usually as the U.S. Global Malaria Coordinator, is an official overseeing all U.S. Government worldwide activities to combat malaria, most notably the President's Malaria Initiative. The position is presidentially appointed within the U.S. Agency for International Development. For its first eleven years the post was occupied by Admiral Tim Ziemer. President's Malaria Initiative
The President's Malaria Initiative (PMI) is a U.S. Government initiative to control and eliminate malaria, one of the leading global causes of premature death and disability. The initiative was originally launched by U.S. president George W. Bush in 2005, and has been continued by each successive U.S. president. PMI was originally created with a mission to "reduce malaria-related mortality by 50 percent across 15 high-burden countries in sub-Saharan Africa". PMI has since expanded to 24 malaria-endemic countries in sub-Saharan Africa and 3 additional countries in the Greater Mekong Subregion of Southeast Asia, where it seeks to further reduce malaria burden and assist countries in achieving malaria elimination. PMI works closely with national malaria programs and global partners including the World Health Organization, Roll Back Malaria, and Global Fund. Raj Panjabi
Raj Panjabi (born 1981) is an American physician, social entrepreneur, professor and United States government official. Panjabi currently serves as senior director for global health security and biodefense on the United States National Security Council. Previously, Panjabi served as the 3rd U.S. Global Malaria Coordinator to lead the U.S. President's Malaria Initiative from February 2021 to February 2022. Panjabi was the first Asian American and first person born in Africa, where malaria remains endemic, to serve in the role. The U.S. President's Malaria Initiative, led by the U.S. Agency for International Development and co-implemented with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, has invested $8 billion to end malaria, helping save over 10.6 million lives and prevent over 1.7 billion cases globally.
