U.S. 87th Infantry Division
The 87th Infantry Division ("Golden Acorn") was a unit of the United States Army in World War I and World War II. After World War II, the 87th Cavalry Reconnaissance Troop became the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, which made the only combat jump in Vietnam and in Iraq. As of 22 September 2021, the rest of the division now exists as a training formation as part of the 84th Training Command. World War I The 87th Division was a National Army division, made up of draftees from Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi. It was activated at Camp Pike, Arkansas on 25 August 1917. Like many units, the 87th Division was used to furnish personnel for other units scheduled for earlier overseas departure. Special Designation
A special designation in the United States Army is a "nickname granted to a military organization" which has been authorized by the Center of Military History and recognized through a certificate signed by the Chief of Military History. Once approved, these designations may only be used by the officially recognized unit, or its recognized successor unit. Format Special designations appear on the list in capital letters. Unofficial designations are not included. For example, the 1st Cavalry Regiment often uses ''Black Hawk,'' but officially adopted 1st REGIMENT OF DRAGOONS. 88th Infantry Division (United States)
The 88th Infantry Division was an infantry Division (military), division of the United States Army that saw service in both World War I and World War II. It was one of the first of the United States Army Reserve, Organized Reserve divisions to be called into federal service, created nearly "from scratch" after the Conscription in the United States, implementation of the draft in 1940. Previous divisions were composed of a core of either Regular Army (United States), Regular Army or Army National Guard, National Guard personnel plus draftees. The 86th Infantry Division, also known as the Blackhawk Division, was a unit of the United States Army in World War I and World War II. Services Of Supply, American Expeditionary Forces
The Services of Supply (S. O. S.) was the support chain of the American Expeditionary Forces in France, England, Italy and the Netherlands during World War I. It was disbanded on August 31, 1919, in France. Organization The Services of Supply (SOS) of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) was established under the designation "Line of Communications," on July 5, 1917. The Line of Communications was judged by senior officers, including Colonel Johnson Hagood, who was in charge of the advance section, to be incompetent. The 39th Infantry Division (Delta Division) was an infantry formation of the Army National Guard, originally formed as the 18th Division in 1917. The division consisted of troops from Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. After training at Camp Beauregard, Louisiana, the division was deployed to France but did not see combat before the end of World War I. The 31st Infantry Division ("Dixie") was an infantry division of the United States Army National Guard, active almost continuously from 1917 to 1968. The 81st Readiness Division ("Wildcat") was a formation of the United States Army originally organized as the 81st Infantry Division during World War I. After World War I, the 81st Division was allotted to the Organized Reserve as a "skeletonized" cadre division.
