Tyssedal is a village in Ullensvang municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The village is located on the shore of the Sørfjorden (Hardanger), Sørfjorden about north of the town of Odda (town), Odda. Tyssedal is located in an environment in a valley between the fjord to the west and the mountains leading up to the Hardangervidda mountain plateau to the east. Tyssedal Church is located in this village. The lake Ringedalsvatnet and the Trolltunga cliff are located just to the east, higher up in the valley. The village has a population (2019) of 601 and a population density of . History Tyssedal is a typical monotown, depending upon the energy received from the Hydropower, hydropower station. Tyssedal Church
Tyssedal Church ( no, Tyssedal kyrkje) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Ullensvang Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. It is located in the village of Tyssedal. It is the church for the Tyssedal parish which is part of the Hardanger og Voss prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Bjørgvin. The white, brick church was built in a modern-looking rectangular design in 1965 using plans drawn up by the architect Aksel Fronth. The church seats about 190 people. History Starting in 1928, the people of Tyssedal began petitioning the government for their own church. It wasn't until the 1960s when their wish came true. A new church, including a full basement which has bathrooms and meeting rooms was designed by Aksel Fronth. The foundation stone was laid on 29 February 1964 and work carried on for about a year. Tyssedal Hydroelectric Power Station
The Tyssedal Power Station (''Tyssedal kraftanlegg'') is a hydroelectric power station and museum located in Tyssedal in the municipality Odda in Vestland, Norway. The station was designed by architect Thorvald Astrup. It started production in 1906 and operated at a combined installed capacity of from 1918, with an average annual production of 700 GWh. The plant was protected by the Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage in 2000, and is part of the Norwegian Museum of Hydropower and Industry. The Norwegian Museum of Hydropower and Industry ( no, Norsk Vasskraft- og Industristadmuseum) is a cultural history museum at Odda in Vestland county, Norway. The museum is located in the village of Tyssedal. The museum is dedicated to the industrial history of Odda and Tyssedal, and more generally to history related to rivers and water, hydropower production, electricity, power intensive industry and its society. A main attraction is the power station Tysso I, which was designed by architect Thorvald Astrup (1876–1940) and constructed between 1906 and 1918. Ullensvang
Ullensvang is a municipality in Vestland county, Norway. It is located in the traditional district of Hardanger. The administrative centre is the town of Odda. Some of the notable villages in the municipality include Lofthus, Utne, Vikebygd, Alsåker, Botnen, Eitrheim, Håra, Røldal, Seljestad, Skare, Tyssedal, Jondal, Herand, Kysnesstranda, and Torsnes. The main inhabited part of Ullensvang municipality lies just to the west of Hardangervidda National Park, which covers most of the Hardangervidda plateau, Europe's largest mountain plateau. Odda (town)
is a town in Ullensvang Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The town is the administrative centre of the municipality and the largest urban area in the whole Hardanger district. The town is located at the southern end of the Sørfjorden, in a narrow valley between towering mountains and the lake Sandvinvatnet to the south. The large Folgefonna glacier lies just west of Odda, high up in the mountains. The village of Odda was declared a "town" in 2004. Ringedalsvatnet
Ringedalsvatnet is a lake in Ullensvang Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The lake sits just east of the village of Skjeggedal and about east (up the valley) from the village of Tyssedal, which sits on the shore of the Sørfjorden. The lake is the main reservoir for a hydroelectric power station in Tyssedal which provides electricity for the power intensive industries in the nearby town of Odda. The wide and high Ringedals Dam was constructed from 1910–1918. Due to the extensive regulation of the nearby lakes such as Langavatnet and Nybuvatnet in the mountains above this lake, several of the large waterfalls that once fed Ringedalsvatnet are no longer regularly flowing. The Tyssestrengene and Ringedalsfossen waterfalls were once very notable waterfalls on the cliffs surrounding this lake. Trolltunga
Trolltunga ("Troll tongue") is a rock formation situated about above sea level in Ullensvang Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The cliff juts horizontally out from the mountain, about above the north side of the lake Ringedalsvatnet. Popularity of the hike to Trolltunga and rock formation itself has exploded in recent years. The increased popularity has turned Trolltunga into a national icon and a major tourist attraction for the region. Until 2010, fewer than 800 people hiked to Trolltunga each year. In 2016 more than 80,000 people hiked the round-trip from the village of Skjeggedal, making it one of Norway's most popular hikes. This is a very challenging hike, at least 10 hours on rough terrain. Sørfjorden (Hardanger)
Sørfjorden is a long fjord that is one of the innermost branches of the main Hardangerfjorden. It is located in Ullensvang Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. It is the longest arm that branches off of the Hardangerfjord. Sørfjorden stretches from just north of the village of Kinsarvik straight south to the industrial town of Odda.
