Tombola ( , ) is a lottery-style board game which originated in Southern Italy. A variation of the game is a popular form of raffle in the UK and elsewhere around the world. By region Italy Tombola is a traditional game played throughout Italy. Neapolitan tombola—today's most popular version—is thought to have originated in 1734 following the new king's decision to tax winnings of the similar game ''Lotto'', then widely-played throughout Naples. Today, tombola is mostly played during Christmas and New Year's Eve, but may also be played during family gatherings such as birthday parties. During the World War II, Second World War, Operation Tombola was a major raid conducted by the 2 Special Air Service, under the command of SAS Major Roy Farran, and Special Operations Executive's Captain Mike Lees, Michael Lees. The operation was launched prematurely against orders from the Allied 15th Army Group. Planning Fifty men parachuted to the Monte Cusna area (Reggio Emilia) between 4 and 24 March 1945, under command of Major Roy Farran to link up with the Special Operations Executive, SOE mission "Envelope" under the command of Michael Lees. A tombolo is a sandy or shingle isthmus. It is a deposition landform by which an island becomes attached to the mainland by a narrow piece of land such as a spit or bar. Once attached, the island is then known as a tied island. The word ''tombolo'' is from the Italian ', meaning 'pillow' or 'cushion', and sometimes translated incorrectly as '' ayre'' (an ayre is a shingle beach of any kind). Several islands tied together by bars which rise above the water level are called a tombolo cluster.
