Távora River
The Távora () is a river that rises near Trancoso and flows north until it flows into the river Douro, of which it is a tributary. Its main tributaries are the Gradiz, Rio de Mel, Azores and Lezíria streams. Originating in Trancoso (district of Guarda), it passes through many locations like Vila do Abade, Vila da Ponte (Sernancelhe), Escurquela, Riodades, Granjinha, Távora e Pereiro and Tabuaço, going into the left bank of the Douro after having traveled about 47 kilometers. It has an important reservoir, created by the Vilar Dam located between the parishes of Vilar and Fonte Arcada. This reservoir helps to normalize the Douro River flows, It is used for the production of electricity and is also recently used for the abstraction of water for public supply. Douro
The Douro (, , ; es, Duero ; la, Durius) is the highest-flow river of the Iberian Peninsula. It rises near Duruelo de la Sierra in Soria Province, central Spain, meanders south briefly then flows generally west through the north-west part of central Spain and into northern Portugal, to its mouth at Porto, the second largest city of Portugal. At its mouth it meets the Atlantic Ocean. The scenic Douro railway line runs close to the river. Adjacent areas produce port (a mildly fortified wine) and other agricultural produce. A small tributary of the river has the Côa Valley Paleolithic Art site which is considered important to the archaeological pre-historic patrimony, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Trancoso () is a city and a municipality in Portugal. The municipality population in 2011 was 9,878, in an area of . The city (cidade) population is about 3.000. The municipality is located in the District of Guarda, Region Centro, sub-region Beira Interior Norte. The present Mayor is Amilcar Salvador. The municipal holiday is May 29. Principal monument: Castle of Trancoso. The municipality is served by the Vila Franca das Naves train station on the Beira Alta line from Pampilhosa to the Spanish border. Vilar Dam
Vilar Dam ( pt, Barragem de Vilar, links=no, also known as ''Barragem de Vilar-Tabuaço'') is an embankment dam on the Távora, a left (southern) tributary of the Douro. It is located in the municipality Tabuaço, in Viseu District, Portugal. Construction of the dam began in 1958 and was completed in 1965. It is owned by '' Companhia Portuguesa de Produção de Electricidade'' (CPPE) and is used for power generation. Dam Vilar Dam is a 58 m tall (height above foundation) and 240 m long rockfill embankment dam with a crest altitude of 555 m. The upstream facing of the dam is made of concrete. The volume of the dam is 300,000 m³. The chute spillway with 2 radial gates is located at the right side of the dam. The maximum discharge is 500 m³/s. There is also a bottom outlet.
