Typhoon Saola (2012)
Typhoon Saola, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Gener, was a strong tropical cyclone affecting the Philippines, Taiwan and China in late-July 2012. It was the ninth named storm and the fourth typhoon of the 2012 Pacific typhoon season. ''Saola'' is the name of a rare mammal found in Vietnam. Meteorological history On July 26, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported that a tropical depression had developed within an area of strong vertical windshear in the monsoon trough about to the southeast of Manila in the Philippines. During that day the shear relaxed before during the next day, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) issued a Tropical Cyclone Formation Alert on the system. Typhoon Damrey (2012)
Typhoon Damrey was a compact tropical cyclone, which became the strongest to affect the area north of the Yangtze River since 1949. It was the tenth named storm and the fifth typhoon of the 2012 Pacific typhoon season. The name ''Damrey'' means ''elephant'' in Khmer, the official language of Cambodia. Damrey developed into a tropical storm north of the Tropic of Cancer on July 28 and drifted slowly. By late on July 30, Damrey began to accelerate west-northwestward. The storm struggled to make deep convection wrap around itself due to vertical wind shear and dry air since formation, until it passed near Kyushu on August 1.
