Two Beasts
"Two Beasts" is a song by the Canadian-American metal band Sumac. It was released as a single on December 7, 2020, through Sub Pop as a part of the 7" Sub Pop Singles Club Volume 5 and was also released digitally. Due to the length of the song and the physical limitations of a 7" record, the song was broken down into two parts for the physical release; one part for each side of the vinyl record. Tom Breihan of ''Stereogum'' described the song as starting out with, "huge, crashing chords, and it returns to thunderous riffage whenever it feels right. But over the course of the song, the band also leans in improvisatory directions, toward drone or free jazz." Sumac (stylized as SUMAC) is an American/Canadian post-metal supergroup that formed in 2014. It features the Vancouver, British Columbia-based Nick Yacyshyn (Baptists), Seattle, Washington-based Brian Cook ( Russian Circles, Botch, ex- These Arms Are Snakes) and Vashon, Washington-based Aaron Turner ( Mamiffer, Old Man Gloom, ex-Isis). Sumac released its debut album '' The Deal'' through Profound Lore Records in 2015. History Musician Aaron Turner started working on new material that would eventually become Sumac with the intention of writing some of the heaviest music he had ever created. ''May You Be Held'' is the fourth studio album by Canadian-American metal band Sumac. The album was released on October 2, 2020 through Thrill Jockey, pushed back from its original release date of September 18. To promote the album, Sumac released the track "The Iron Chair" for online streaming in July 2020. Sumac asked Thrill Jockey to refrain from posting the album to the music streaming platform Spotify due to what the band referred to as CEO Daniel Ek's "pretty repugnant statements" made earlier in 2020 about artists not performing well on the site. ''May You Be Held'' was recorded over three years (2017–2019) and recorded at three different recordings studios, primarily in Washington state.
