Tuse Church
Tuse Church is located near Holbæk in northwestern Sealand, Denmark. It dates back to the year 1200. Frescos The church is richly decorated with both romanesque and late gothic murals. It is however the latter which are regarded as possibly the finest works of the Isefjord artists who were most active from 1460 to 1480. The pictures depict stories from the Old and New Testaments but the life of Jesus is particularly interesting as it combines the biblical accounts with images of kings, devils and women brewing beer. Zealand
Zealand ( da, Sjælland ) at 7,031 km2 is the largest and most populous island in Denmark proper (thus excluding Greenland and Disko Island, which are larger in size). Isefjord
Ise Fjord ( da, Isefjorden) is a deeply branched arm of the sea into the Danish island Zealand. From its relatively narrow entrance from the Kattegat at Hundested and Rørvig, branches of Ise Fjord stretch 35 km inland and divide the northern part of Zealand into the peninsulas of Odsherred, Hornsherred, and Nordsjælland. Some branches have names of their own, such as Roskilde Fjord which joins Ise Fjord proper close to its northern end, Lejre Vig in Lejre Municipality just west of Roskilde harbor, Holbæk Fjord, and the now drained Lammefjord and Sidinge Fjord at the west. The depth of the water in the fjord averages 5 to 7 meters, the deepest areas being those on the western side of Orø. Salinity is from 1.6 to 2.2%. Altarpiece
An altarpiece is an artwork such as a painting, sculpture or relief representing a religious subject made for placing at the back of or behind the altar of a Christian church. Though most commonly used for a single work of art such as a painting or sculpture, or a set of them, the word can also be used of the whole ensemble behind an altar, otherwise known as a reredos, including what is often an elaborate frame for the central image or images. Altarpieces were one of the most important products of Christian art especially from the late Middle Ages to the era of the Counter-Reformation. Anders Nielsen Hatt
Anders Nielsen Hatt (born before 1612, died after 1626) was a wood carver active in Roskilde on the Danish island of Zealand. He is remembered especially for his carved pulpits in the area. There is only one remaining work signed by Nielsen Hatt, the pulpit in Stenløse Church near Frederikssund. The accounts for the church in Ubby Church near Kalundborg indicate that a craftsman from Roskilde created the pulpit there. It was very probably Nielsen Hatt, especially as it coincides with his style. The pulpit in Smørum Church is said to be the work of Brix Michgell's workshop in Roskilde but the figures of the Evangelists are certainly Nielsen Hatt's. The altarpiece in Tuse Church is said to be his work and he is thought to have contributed to the altarpiece in Smørum.
