''Psathyrotes'' is a genus of North American plants in the Helenieae, sneezeweed tribe within the Asteraceae, sunflower family. It contains annual plant, annual and perennial plant, perennial forbs and low subshrubs native to dry areas of southwestern North America. Common names include turtleback, brittlestem, and fanleaf. The plants are low, densely branching, hairy, and scaly, with a turpentine-like odor. Leaves are alternate and hairy. ''Psathyrotes ramosissima'' is a species of flowering plant in the aster family known by the common names velvet turtleback and turtleback. It is native to the southwestern United States. Description It is a low, neatly mounded plant producing spreading stems which are hairless to densely woolly in texture. It grows to tall and has a turpentine odour. Leaves are borne on long petioles. The leaf blade is roundish, veined, and up to long. It has a toothed edge and a velvety surface coated in woolly fibres and shiny hairs; it is brownish to grayish or pale green in color. The knobby inflorescence is wide and lined with woolly gray-green phyllaries with dull points that curve outward. It contains several hairy yellow disc florets. The fruit is an achene tipped with a large pappus of over 100 long, fine bristles. It is native to the southwestern United States and as far north as Idaho. It grows in desert and scrub habitat, often in areas with alkali soils among plants such as shadscale. It is a low, flat or mounding plant with spreading, hairy, scaly stems. It is pale green to reddish purple in color with gray-green leaves, its color dull from the coating of fibers on its surface.
